Movie Magic #2

Savory & Supernatural

Rate this book
A down-on-her-luck witch and an ambitious actor who definitely doesn't believe in the supernatural collide in a magical novella romance, for fans of A Witch's Guide to Fake Dating a Demon.

Kingston went to an exclusive drama school in London and has leading-man looks and charm. But while the work's been steady, he's still desperate for the perfect breakout, award-bait role to sink his teeth into. In the meantime, he's determined to make the most of his time on location in New Zealand for a major film franchise. But ever since he picked up a shiny washed-up trinket on the beach shoot, things have been getting . . . spooky.

Amalia was already the black sheep of her family, having developed cooking witchery instead of plant magic. Then she started seeing dead people. After her career as a chef hits a snag, she's finally back on her feet running a food truck at a small location shoot that might just turn into bigger catering jobs. But, of course, nothing in her life ever goes that smoothly. Actor Kingston Williams is the hottest man she's ever seen. He's also, unfortunately, haunted by an angry ghost, something he'd never believe if she told him. But she can't seem to avoid this incorrigible flirt . . .

From the author of Bespoke & Bespelled, another witchy movie-set romance sure to charm.

This is a cute little supernatural love story. It is short and sweet and there are plenty of ghostly hijinks to keep you entertained. I loved all the food descriptions and the magic that goes along with it.

Oh my gosh! That was just so much fun. And now I’m kicking myself for having missed out on the first book in the series. (There’s another title for my already overloaded to-be-read shelf.) But this book stands completely fine on its own. The opening scene and when Amalia and Kingston interact with our previous leading couple were the only times I was left feeling like I might have missed something. Otherwise, everything I needed was in this book. I adored these quirky characters, and watching them falling in love was so much fun. I already can’t wait for our next opportunity to do this again. In fact, I might have to re-read this right now, just because.
I received a complimentary advance copy of this book through NetGalley.

I adore this cosy paranormal rom-com series. The setting is a glorious combination of movie sets with Hollywood stars + beautiful local New Zealand scenery. In this, the heroine is a witch with food magic, which means this book is best consumed with a baked good in hand. She’s on set as a caterer, while the hero is a movie star who doesn’t realise he’s being haunted. The stories in this series are delicious feel-good confections, and I inhaled this in one go.

thank you netgalley for the eArc in exchange for an honest review! <3

I ATE THIS BOOK UP. literally read it in one sitting and it was delicious.

i loved both characters separately and together they were cute, i just wish we saw more of their dynamic together. we got two dates from them and they'd only known each other for a week, so i think a lot of their arch, as a couple, was rushed. but even with the timing issues i had with the book, i still thoroughly enjoyed it and would 100% recommend this as a quick and fun read to everyone!
it brought the witchy vibes, the spooky vibes and everything i love about a cute lil romcom.

These little romance/fantasy novellas where Hollywood meets New Zealand are very cute, fun, fast reads. The stories and the characters in Savory & Supernatural (and in the preceding Bespoke & Bespelled) are very satisfying—though with the food this one focuses on, you may be left hungry!

Amalia has recently been fired from her job as a chef. She now owns a catering business and gets a job as craft services on a set of a movie in New Zealand.

Kingston keeps getting type casted in period dramas. He really likes collecting trinkets from the sets. He picks up a spoon that's connected to a ghost.

Amalia can see the ghost and tries to get the trinket back.

I really loved this novella. Magic, ghosts and New Zealand. Yes, please. I can't wait to read more by this author.

PUB DATE: April 30th!

I really enjoyed this book! It was nicely paced and I finished it in about a day. The characters were fun and I enjoyed the setting. I would definitely say this has a cozy vibe!

This is the second book of the Movie Magic series, but I believe you can read it as a standalone.

I liked the addition of plant magic and ghosts in this book. Amalia is our hardworking leading lady that is a witch down on her luck, she is also a fantastic cook. Our main squeeze Kingston is an up and coming actor with some peculiar tastes. I found their chemistry electric! I like how each character has faults and were completely human, honestly it’s nice to read about imperfect people because that’s so close to real life!

The ending wrapped up nicely and I hope there will be more additions in this world. I love the authors writing it’s digestible romance and adult, there is swooning and confidence which I love! They knew their attraction right away.

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC!

This is a quick novella about a a chef who hits a bump in her career and an actor who is trying to find his breaking role. The chef also happens to be a witch with a gift of clairvoyance and our actor is being haunted but doesn’t believe in the supernatural. Will the Amalia make Kingston a believer? How will their relationship turn out?

Read and find out!

Thank you 8th Note Press for surprising me with this e-arc! This story is a super quick novella about a girl with magic who can see a ghost haunting her new crush.. how do you fix that while building a relationship??

While I eat, breathe, and sleep romance, I don’t not think I am a magic + romance person. There’s only been a book or two that’s really been up my alley in that genre. So you have to remember reading is subjective so this might REALLY be for you. I took that into consideration in my writing because the story was well written that it kept me entertained. Because I know others may love this more than me and the writing was good, I gave it a rating of 3/5 ⭐️

Savory & Supernatural was a cute and quick read (157 pages)! This was my first book that involved magic/seeing ghosts and I think it might be a new favorite genre to read. Savory & Supernatural is the second book in The Movie Magic Series. I haven't read the first one yet (Titled BeSpoke & BeSpelled) and I had no trouble reading the 2nd book as a standalone. I enjoyed it so much that I'll need to go back and read the first!

Amalia owns a food truck and is responsible for feeding the cast and crew on a movie set. She has cooking magic and also has the ability to see ghosts. Kingston is the star of the film and has a penchant for collecting random trinkets. Kingston picks up a shiny object and takes it back to his trailer and that's when his and Amalia's world collides. Stay tuned for light romance, moments of spookiness and lots of laughs!

Many thanks to NetGalley, 8th Note Press and Karen Healey for access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A dreamy actor, a witchy chef, and an angry ghost all come together on a movie set in New Zealand for this short and sweet paranormal romance.

Kingston is an actor in a successful movie franchise who wants to make his big break. He is successful but wants to be a household name and is working hard every day to accomplish it. He is currently in New Zealand filming another film and thank goodness he gets along with the cast because his director is something else. He is quirky and that's normally charming but the director Oliver thinks differently. When the new craft services chef, Amalia shows us and forgets to make one of his favorite snacks, Kingston isn't happy. He isn't a diva and is known as one of the good guys but routine is important for him. He knows he is out of line and quickly apologizes. Amalia doesn't hold a grudge and is a fan so they move past it. They probably won't talk to each other again. That is until she sees a ghost right next to him. The ghost is angry and wants a spoon back that Kingston picked up while he was shooting a scene on the beach. Amalia wants to help the ghost so she tries to find ways to get closer to him so the spoon can be returned. Along the way, Kingston and Amalia bond quickly and catch feelings. It's beautiful how they can open up with each other when they are normally a bit closed off. They have both felt like the oddballs in their families and that makes them understand one another better. While they share so much chemistry, can Amalia ever tell him the truth about her magic and powers? Because if she doesn't this ghost could haunt them forever.

Overall, if you want a quick romance that has paranormal and witchy vibes with delicious chemistry and food, then this is for you!

A fun read that I finished in two bites!

I really like the world of these books which combines secret generational magic (if you're in one of the families, you know) with behind the scenes stories from the New Zealand film industry (or at least, Hollywood visiting New Zealand).

I really liked Amalia, a Craft Services chef at the end of her rope, struggling to recover from a career meltdown (and in a deeper sense, to recover from the feeling of 'never enough' because her magical skills are undervalued by her family.

But there's a ghost on set, haunting the star of the film... and the only way Amalia can protect him is to date him!

If it was a whole novel of "oh we can't tell him magic exists" then it might have become tiresome, but the pace of this speedy novella means that we rattle through to the conclusion at a natural rate.

Warning, you will need to find a caramel slice to eat within 24 hours of reading this book.

Savory and Supernatural is a romance novella that follows an actor and a chef who happens to have magic as well. We follow them as Amalia tries to help Kingston get rid of a ghost, however, he doesn’t know about this ghost and thinks he’s just trying to date Amalia.

I thought this was a cute book! It’s short so it is a quick read. I loved the paranormal stuff throughout. It also had some humor and I loved all the characters. I haven’t read the other one in this series but I probably will at some point. I loved the New Zealand setting and all the descriptions.

My only complaint is that it seemed too short for me. I wish we got a little more chemistry build up between the two people. I also would’ve liked more dates or an epilogue or something to see where they end up.

I would recommend this to people looking for a short romance! Thanks so much to netgalley and 8th note press for the arc of this book in exchange for an honest review!

One of my current favorite TV shows is Ghosts, both the US and UK versions, plus I am a huge fan of Charmed. I am very happy I was given this book to read, and was introduced to an author that was previously unknow to me. Thank you Netgalley!
This book is a fun, speedy read! A story with ghosts, friendly witches and romance! How could you not love this story. Amalia is a witch, the friendly kind, but she can also see ghosts. Kingston is a handsome actor who is a bit of a pack rat, and it's his penchant for collecting that gets the ghost. And this ghost is not happy! Amalia and Kingston take a step towards romance, but will that pesky ghost ruin the romance and Amalia's career.
The romance is sweet, the witches are charming and well that ghost cannot be trusted! Pick up this fun witchy romance! I hope there are more books with these two characters. This is great as a YA and adult read, no spice, but just the right amount of scary and sweet!

Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity. My review opinions are my own. ,This is a adorable Novella romance with a touch of paranormal and a lot of love. I enjoyed the magical side of the main character and I enjoyed the romance that is presented in just the right way and very sweet. The main character is Amalia who is fighting the distain of her magical family for not being the right kind of witch in their eyes. She ends up losing her job and is now running a food truck. She has hopes her life will calm down until she meets a actor who sweeps her away with his charming personality and killer good looks. He is being haunted but will he believe her when she shares his angry ghost with him? A fun read that keeps the reader entertained with two complex and likable characters.

Its a wonderful escape read and I look forward to the next in series.

Another super quick witchy novella! I read this super quickly and loved this story as much as I loved Marnie and Riders story. This story follows a food witch & someone who can see ghosts and an actor. The descriptions of food, the magic descriptions, everything in this book was magical and immersive and I was grasping for more every time. The only thing I really wish we would’ve seen was more of them as a couple, we truthfully didn’t get to see a lot of that which sucked because I loved their dynamic so much. The cutest part of this book was when he first tried her food, I melted a bit when he loved it so much.
I’m hoping there is more in this world because I love all the characters so much. Thank you to Netgalley and 8th Note Press for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley and 8th Note Press for the advanced copy of Savory & Supernatural by Karen Healey!

Savory & Supernatural follows Amalia, a chef with the magic to enhance food (and also see ghosts), and Kingston, an actor, as they meet and work on the same set together. When one of Kingston's quirks leads to him being haunted by a progressively aggressive ghost, Amalia has to toe the line of getting close to him to get rid of the ghost, but also to get to know him.

I liked the premise of the book, especially how magic manifests in this world between Amalia and her cousin. However, I felt like many of the characters fell a little flat for me. There wasn't really any point in the book I felt sad, happy, excited, etc for the characters.

I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Beware of possible spoilers.

I enjoyed this one. It was the perfect palette cleanser between fantasies. Short, sweet, with some magic? I will take it!

The magic is so much fun in this. Amalia has food magic and can see ghosts. Kingston is a movie star with possibly some magic of his own and being haunted by said-ghosts. They're both cute and I liked their relationship. It unfolds in such a natural and fun way.

I do wish it was just a tiny bit longer. Just a smidgen! If only to get a little bit more of the character's budding relationship as the ghost situation sort of took over and then the pairing felt a little rushed at the end.

I feel like I need to read Bespoke & Bespelled, too!

This is a fun, entertaining, quirky, quick read. Kingston and Amalia are interesting, relatable, intriguing, entertaining, fun, complex characters. I enjoyed these characters and the paranormal aspects of the story. The path to their HEA is full of twists and turns and entertaining to read. There are many aspects of this story that I absolutely love – I can’t wait to read more from this series. The secondary characters added to the fabric of the story and my enjoyment. The story is easy to read and get into.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Review: This was a short and sweet supernatural romance. But this was so short, and the setup took a while, so by the time we got to the romance, the supernatural part took over and became the focal point. So, the romance just dissipated, and I nearly forgot about it until the very end of the book. I wish we got more of this, as I liked Amalie and Kingston and was hoping for something more from their new relationship.

3.5 stars for this cute, short and sweet little movie magic novella! Not only do we get to see the magic of movies, we get some real magic in the form of a cooking witch and mysterious ghosts!

After a terrible last working experience, Amalia is lucky to get a job as craft services on a movie shooting near her hometown. Kingston, the leading man, cannot get enough of her delicious magical food- and the ghost he’s picked up won’t leave him or Amalia alone!!

This was the perfect little fluff needed for a cozy afternoon interlude!

This was a decently quick read that got me ready for more spooky season reads. I thought the premise was interesting, but I felt like maybe it just fell a bit flat for me. I realize it is a short story, but I felt like there wasn't as much character development as I normally like, and it left me feeling a bit disconnected to the characters. That being said, I did not read the first story in this series, that might have helped. While it was cute, it just left me wanting more.

Thank you NetGalley & the publisher for the chance to read this as an ARC. Here is my honest review:

This wasn’t a bad book, just IMO some parts were boring & I didn’t feel connected to the Main Characters. It was a lot to pack into only 138 pages.

I did enjoy what the story was about :

a chef that’s a witch (FMC) has to help get back a spoon that belongs to a ghost from an actor (MMC) that on the set she’s cooking for. They go out on dates as while shes also trying to get into his place to find the spoon.

This was the perfect book to have gotten me out of my reading slump. It was cute, short, and funny.

I really enjoyed Kinston and Amalia as characters. I do wish we got to see a bit more of their dynamic on set instead of just little glances. Like little touches and actual interactions. All just to build up their chemistry a little more. Other than that, I loved the plot, the characters (primary and secondary), the magic. I definitely plan on reading the rest of this series as it comes out.

Thank you to NetGalley and 8th Note Press for providing me an ARC copy of the book for my honest opinion.

Thank you to Netgalley, 8th Note Press, & Karen Healy for the eARC of Savory & Supernatural. All opinions are my own.

Savory & Supernatural is an interconnected standalone cozy magical romance within Karen Healy’s Movie Magic series. I normally am not a huge fan of novellas but this one is short and sweet and suited the story very well. I truly enjoyed the suspense element of plot line as well as the uniqueness of the characters! You could definitely read Savory & Supernatural without reading Bespoke & Bespelled and the plot would make sense but I highly recommend reading that one first!

✨ Magical realism
✨ Movie star MMC
✨ Witchy FMC
✨ A haunting
✨ Novella

Fantastic second novella in the series, but unlike the first it left me wanting so much more.
Kingston ends up feeling like a parody of his own character and I just want to actually get to know him better. I was also left with a lot of magic related questions.
While the story was great and well paced and worked wonderfully as a rounded out novella, this one feels like it could so easily be fleshed out into a much more satisfying full length novel.

This is the second book in the Movie Magic series, but can be read as a standalone. I had not read the first book prior to this one.

Savory & Supernatural is a short and sweet novella that follows Amalia, a witch who is working in a food truck on a film set and Kingston, a quirky, but haunted actor.
I would recommend this one to anyone looking for a spooky, lighthearted romcom.
