Jason Howell
Jason Howell asked Clay Carmichael:

Clay... I'm asking this of several writers, some friends, some strangers... What genre or tradition do you see yourself as being part of, and what is the beauty of writing within that genre/tradition? What can it do that others can't?

Clay Carmichael Genres and traditions are often publishing constructs and I try not to think about them much when I'm writing. I write and paint what I need to and let others pigeonhole. That said, writing for young people--the slot I'm usually put into--keeps me conscious of writing with clarity and, with picture books especially--economy.
