Because I can't always remember titles or I forget to email when people are kind enough to ask "What are you reading?"

Below are a few I've recently liked--or loved--some new, some not.

And I only review or archive books I like or love. Literature is a wildly subjective enterprise; one person's least favorite book may be a book someone else loves best of all.

"Be gentle with one another's efforts. Be kind and considerate with your criticism. Always remember that it's just as hard to write a bad book as it is to write a good book." -Malcolm Cowley

I write and paint what I need to and let others pigeonhole. That said, writing for young people--the slot I'm usually put into--keeps me conscious of writing with clarity and, with picture books especially--economy. (less)

The idea of drawing and painting intentionally and then professionally came much later. I did take some art classes in school and college, but I didn't major in art. Some latent abilities must have been under the surface all that time, though, because when I turned my mind and hands to it I found some (very) rudimentary ability and a desire to really work at it, which is the main thing. Now, I find words good for some things and art good for others. As M. Sendak said, "pictures tell their own side of the story." I like that. (less)

“I inhaled the musty, leathery, old-papery scent and a shiver passed over me. If I had any idea of heaven, it was this: shelves and shelves of books, ten times as many as were upstairs, each with stories or pictures more exciting and beautiful than the next, and two overstuffed chairs big enough for me to sleep in.”
Clay Carmichael, Wild Things

“You know the thing that burns me most about being a kid?...The worst thing about being a kid is that people twice my size with half my brains get to run my life.

—Zoë”

What second pick for a Newbery Honor?

(I tried to include all the books we have read, along with the books mentioned on our "the others good and up" thread, and a few on the Newbery 2010 list on goodreads. If, however, I have not included a book you want to vote for just send me a message or write a comment. I will add it to the list.)

“When you're writing you're trying to find out something which you don't know.”
James Baldwin

“The beautiful part of writing is that you don't have to get it right the first time, unlike, say, a brain surgeon.”
Robert Cormier

“One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.”
Annie Dillard, The Writing Life

“you have to play a long time to be able to play like yourself.”
