The story takes place months after the conclusion of the first book, and Bella and Markus haven’t seen each other in all that time, though they keep in touch mostly with letters. Markus has finally returned to Sziveria and is eager to reunite with Bella, so he is really disappointed when she doesn’t meet him and Lunah upon their arrival. He quickly finds out, however, that Bella wasn’t allowed to leave work and has been demoted for working with him on his previous case.
I adored the scene when Markus and Bella reunite. It’s so sweet and emotional, and you can tell how much they missed each other. So, it’s no surprise when Bella takes a few weeks out of work to help Markus solve his newest case, a murder of a young singer.
Bella and Markus so need to open their own private investigation business because they are incredibly skilled at what they do. They see things that are often overlooked or not considered in difficult investigations, which is really intriguing. Bella, Markus, and Lunah make a great team, and I love how they are forming their own little unit. They each have strengths and weaknesses, and they balance each other well. Their slow-building romance is filled with sexual tension, and I’m excited to see how their story progresses as they build a relationship and possible future together and with Lunah.
Lunah is so sweet and protective and adorable. I would love to be able to communicate with my dogs the way Markus does with Lunah! Imagine knowing their thoughts and feelings – so cool! The story delves a bit into Markus’s link to his beast, which I found really interesting. I’m eager to learn more about Markus’s home, family, and backstory.
I also really like the growing relationship between Markus and Bella’s mother. They have deep respect and admiration for each other, and it feels like they are developing a lovely friendship. Bella’s mother has a gift for being able to see good matches, and I think she sees that he and Bella are fated mates. But I love how she doesn’t pressure Bella or even say much about it. She gives Bella the time to develop feelings without influence, thereby giving her a choice. I think this is really important, considering Bella doesn’t have a lot of choice in this dystopian world. Her livelihood, living arrangements, and more are dictated by people with more power, influence, or money than her. Her mother and Markus are the only ones who consistently value and seek out her opinion.

More Than a Silly Crush is a lovely addition to the Cowboys of Stargazer Springs series. It’s sweet and charming, and the romance between Parker and BMore Than a Silly Crush is a lovely addition to the Cowboys of Stargazer Springs series. It’s sweet and charming, and the romance between Parker and Bluebonnet is wonderful. Like the other books in the series, this one focuses a lot on relationships. Friendships, family, romantic relationships, and more are explored, and I like how the book highlights the importance of setting boundaries, nurturing healthy relationships, and knowing one’s worth.
Parker and Bluebonnet have known each other since they were kids, and though Parker has loved her for years, Bluebonnet has no idea. They make such a great pair, and I really enjoyed their friends-to-lovers romance. Parker is so husband material! Attentive, supportive, and thoughtful, he is always there for Bluebonnet, and when she is pregnant and single, he jumps at the chance to marry her. Though Parker’s sure of his long-held feelings, Bluebonnet is just starting to realize that her feelings for Parker are more than friendly. It makes for an entertaining and
There’s also a great found family aspect of the story. The people of Stargazer Springs Ranch are fantastic secondary characters, and I love that the main characters from previous books have roles in this one. You don’t have to read the other books to follow this one, but if you did read the others, you’ll be happy to see some recurring favorites.
Parker’s family is amazing too, and they treat Bluebonnet as one of their own. I love this for Bluebonnet, especially since her relationship with her mother is so toxic. I feel like Bluebonnet learns a lot about herself and what she wants (and doesn’t want) in her relationships, and though she doesn’t have the support and love from her mother, she finds it in Parker and the other people in her life.
I would definitely recommend this book and series to people who like clean contemporary romances. It was sweet and entertaining, and the sweet moments and the funny, laugh-out-loud moments balance the more serious subjects well. But when Julian is injured right before the race, he fears he may have to forfeit and lose his land forever. An orphan raised by Julian’s parents alongside Julian, Bobby has always felt out of place, more content in the stables with her horses than in the ballrooms. So, when the opportunity to race arises, she jumps at the chance. This is her opportunity to help Julian, who has always stood by her side and supported her, and prove her skill and success as a horse master. Of course, this is completely unconventional for 1830s London, but so is Bobby.
Bobby is a layered and interesting protagonist, and I quickly became immersed in her story. Strong, self-assured, and fiercely determined, Bobby doesn’t conform to the dictates of society. She loves horses and has a special way with them, and she much prefers her role in the stables to her role as a member of polite society. However, she also longs to be her own person and not live under Julian’s shadow. She’s so conflicted between expectations and who she really wants to be, and she struggles to find a compromise that works for her while facing difficulties and sabotage in the race, as well as conflicts in her personal and professional life.
Though Lawrence doesn’t have an affinity with horses like Bobby, he is a skilled horseman and a strong competitor. Fueled by his desire to get back his land and to beat Julian, who he doesn’t like, Lawrence is determined to win the race. I loved Lawrence! He’s very introspective, and I like how he never expects Bobby to be anything but what she is. In a society where many tried to fit her into a mold, this is so refreshing. Lawrence also has an interesting story, and I sympathized with him when I learned why he keeps people at a distance. He changes so much over the course of the story, and I think his deepening connection with Bobby is the catalyst for these changes.
I adored Lawrence and Bobby’s swoon-worthy enemies-to-lovers romance. Whether antagonizing, arguing, or flirting, their chemistry is palpable. They do not get along when they first meet, which makes sense because they are competing against each other. At one point in the story Bobby calls Lawrence a “vainglorious viscount,” and I kind of want to meet a viscount just so I can use this alliterative gem. She also calls him a toad, as well as some other antagonistic names. It’s so comical, and the sparks between the two are fantastic! There are also many tender and touching moments that made my heart squeeze.
With a setting across the English countryside in a weeks-long race, the story is unique and entertaining, and the passionate declarations and epilogue are wonderful! I always love Lotte R. James’s historical romances, and this one is no exception.

Win has lived her entire life as a male because of the scheming machinations of her mother. As an adult on her own, Win finds it easier to pose as a male in a man’s world. She’s a compelling character with a heartbreaking backstory, and she has worked hard to become independent and self-sufficient going from town to town and job to job before her disguise is revealed. Since Win is a hard worker and really good at her job, things go quite smoothly, until Stratford figures out Win’s ruse.
Stratford is another interesting character. An accomplished artist, he is not the easiest person to serve, and he’s known for being late, disheveled, and unabashedly charming. I thought he was great, and I loved the growing relationship between him and Win. They have so much chemistry, and once her identity is revealed, the sparks really fly! However, both know if they are found out, it could cause a major scandal, which would tarnish them both. Win is used to leaving before the going gets tough, and Stratford doesn’t need any more entanglements, but they can’t deny how they feel. Theirs isn’t a high-stakes romance, but it does have its share of obstacles, and I was curious how they would resolve some of the lies and deceptions made.
I also liked the secondary characters, especially Stratford’s brothers and a few of the other houseguests in attendance. The relationships between Stratford and his brothers intrigued me. They are all so different, yet they are united in their support and love for each other. Like Win, the brothers didn’t have the kindest upbringing, yet they remain deeply connected to each other and the land they are working so hard to save. And I’m really curious about Stratford’s other brothers, especially the brother with children and a missing wife. His story sounds super intriguing!

The story follows Wren, a woman who was forced into servitude when she was young, and Jarl Knud, who is seeking a marriage alliance with a high-status bride, Earl Ingrid, in order to help his people. Though they can’t be together, they also can’t deny their feelings.
Wren and Knud are both well-developed and layered characters, and I like that we see both of their perspectives throughout the story. Wren is strong and smart, and she remains optimistic even though she has had a very hard life. Enslaved since childhood, Wren doesn’t know a world where she is free, but meeting Knud and learning about his people changes her.
Knud’s views are very progressive and forward-thinking, especially when compared to many of the other leaders. He seems to want a more unified clan with people being treated as equals and no slaves at all. This is so different from what Wren, enslaved since childhood, knows. She has had no control over her life for so long that she is desensitized to the unfair and sometimes cruel treatment she receives. Knud and his unconventional views open Wren’s eyes to a different kind of future.
I enjoyed Wren and Knud’s forbidden romance. They have amazing chemistry, and the angst between them is pretty fantastic. The story also has some action and intrigue, and compelling secondary characters, some that I loved and others that I loved to hate. (Yes, I’m talking to you, Earl Ingrid!) Overall, it’s an entertaining read and one I would definitely recommend this to historical romance readers.

This was a fun read! It has a lot of humor, some great banter, and the fake haunting was fantastic. At first, Penvale and Jane don’t really get along or understand each other. There is little chemistry between them, and their romance is gradual. I like that this par becomes friends first. They learn so much about each other, especially since they are at a country estate away from the hustle, bustle, and distractions of the city. Penvale begins to see past Jane’s prickly demeanor, and Jane sees that Penvale has much more substance than she originally thought. They both seem a little surprised by their growing feelings, but between their antagonistic and sometimes flirtatious banter and their late-night excursions to investigate the hauntings, there’s clearly a depending bond between them.
Penvale is so thoughtful, especially when he realizes Jane struggles with shyness. Her rudeness and standoffish personality hides her shyness well, but it also doesn’t endear her to anyone. But Penvale understands her. He’s such a sweetheart, and I love how considerate he is of her feelings and worries. Jane is an introvert and content with a solitary life, but Penvale has a large group of friends. Needless to say, they’re quite daunting to Jane. I like how considerate Penvale is of Jane’s feelings and how Jane slowly begins to open up to him and his friends.

I thought this was a fantastic debut by Sara Hashem. Exciting, immersive, and full of twists and turns, the novel gripped me from the first pages and didn’t let go until the very end.
This is one of those reviews where I struggled to organize my thoughts. I enjoyed so many elements of the book that I wasn’t sure what to focus on in my review without giving too much away. The characters, the world-building, the fantasy elements, the themes, the plot, the gorgeous writing style – I loved it all! I actually have another post scheduled that spotlights a bunch of my favorite quotes from the book because there were so many poignant and powerful lines.
And the characters! They’re fascinating. Often torn between loyalties, Sylvia, Arin, and so many others have a moral greyness to them. I loved Sylvia. The story is told from her unreliable perspective, and her story is tragic, complicated, and mysterious. This is a young woman with a ton of secrets, many of which would put her life at risk if exposed. I like how we slowly learn more and more about her past and what happened to her that led to the present. There’s also a strong cast of supporting characters, and I particularly like Sylvia’s friends and the found family aspect of the story.
And the romance! Ahh! I, of course, have to talk about the explosive enemies-to-lovers romance because IT. WAS. EVERYTHING. Sylvia and Arin hate each other, and they butt heads through most of the book. Their relationship is slow-building and contentious, and the tension is so thick! Through it all, Sylvia and Arin have an amazing amount of chemistry, and their banter is top-notch. I’m all for an angsty love story, especially when it feels forbidden, which is exactly what Sylvia and Arin’s feels like. Both characters fight their feelings, but how can you fight something so strong? There are so many scenes where I was all but chanting “Kiss already,” and the build-up and constant push and pull between the couple was perfection.
The Jasad Heir has everything I love in a YA romantasy. I’m so glad I buddy read this because I was screaming through most of it. Between the layered and nuanced characters, the twisty plot, the complex world-building and political intrigue, and that fantastic romance, there was a lot to gush and ruminate about! There are also some really thought-provoking messages and questions posed throughout the story about what makes a monster, how people define themselves, and what we owe our country and our culture. This is definitely a strong introduction to the series. And after that ending, I NEED to get the next book ASAP! lol This is definitely going down as one of my top fantasy reads of the year.

This is such an immersive series, and Cradit created an intricately developed world with a complex political system, a variety of cultures, and a rich history. I’m always so impressed by the level of detail in the world-building, the way the author brought the world to life, and how she builds upon it as the series progresses.
Edriss is my favorite kind of FMC. Strong and smart, Edriss speaks her mind and stands by her ideals. I liked her arc and how she finds a voice in her family and in the political sphere. She is a valuable asset to her brother and other allies, but she is often underestimated. There is one person who sees her worth, though. Lorcan, Edriss’s loyal and brave bodyguard and lifelong friend, is a complex and conflicted character, and I absolutely adored him. He’s a sweet, cinnamon roll – and such an unbelievable friend. He is honorable to a fault, and his selflessness and devotion to his country are admirable. Of course, these decisions don’t always lead to his happiness, and it causes a lot of issues in his relationship with Edriss.
Ahhhh – the slow-building and deeply burning romance between Edriss and Lorcan is angsty and complicated, and there are a zillion reasons they should be together, but it’s impossible for either to imagine a life apart. Lorcan and Edriss have been in love with each other for years, but they both refuse to reveal their feelings. He’s her bodyguard, and her brother made it very clear Lorcan was not to sully her reputation. So, Lorcan and Edriss are the closest of friends. They share everything with each other – everything but their love for each other. And when Edriss becomes betrothed to someone else, and Lorcan begins a relationship with another woman, it seems as if life is tearing them apart.
Though each book in this series is a standalone, there are several characters in the story that are also in The Raven and the Rush. I loved that! The story takes place after Evra has become king, and things aren’t going smoothly for him. Lies, blackmail, betrayal, a country in turmoil, and a ton of political intrigue and maneuvering cause complications for his country, his life, and the lives of those around him. It’s interesting to see how he, Rhosyn, and Rhosyn’s sister have fared and how they deal with all of these new and difficult situations.
With rebel threats, witch hunts, and enemies posing as allies, Edriss and Lorcan become embroiled in dangerous and potentially deadly situations. The plot is so well-layered, and there’s never a dull moment in the story. The steam level in this one is similar to The Raven and the Rush, but I would recommend checking out the content warnings before reading the book. This is a dark fantasy, and there are aspects of the story that could trigger some readers.

In the story, Jasmine finds herself on a cruise with her parents and a bunch of meddlesome aunties and uncles. Since Jasmine has a recent break-up with her long-time boyfriend, she has no place to live. Pushed to take her vacation days, Jasmine sees the cruise as the perfect escape even though her parents didn’t really invite her. Unbeknownst to her, however, it is a senior cruise, and the only other person under 50 on the cruise is Jake, who Jasmine babysat when they were younger. Now, Jake’s all grown up and awaiting results from his bar exam.
When Jasmine first meets Jake, they do not hit it off. She sees the same cocky, arrogant attitude her ex had. As they spend more time together, they see past the superficial, and their feelings start to grow. But they’re on a cruise with their families. Jasmine is also older than Jake, and she babysat him once upon a time. Plus, she just got out of a relationship, and her life is a little chaotic. She finds a million reasons not to go forward with Jake, but her heart is telling her to take a risk. She is so conflicted, and the comical, antagonistic, and goading banter shows it. They have the best back-and-forth that highlights all of their chemistry and sexual tension.
The story is definitely a romance, but the focus is really on Jasmine’s growth as a character. She learns a lot about herself during the cruise, and I think she takes a hard look at herself and her relationships with her parents and her ex. Jasmine has always felt she was a disappointment to her parents, and they have a very strained relationship. The outcast of her family, Jasmine struggles with confidence and self-worth because of the years of judgment, disapproval, and berating she received. She goes through an amazing amount of growth over the course of the story, and the cruise that seemed like it was going to be a dull and unpleasant time becomes an experience of a lifetime and an opportunity to med old hurts and start new relationships. At first, I felt like Jasmine was immature, and I didn’t really understand her. However, I ended up really liking her and thought she had a lot of depth.
Unlike Jasmine, Jake has always been treated like the golden boy. He can do no wrong. However, this comes with its own pressures, and Jake has familial expectations and responsibilities too. I thought the author did a great job of highlighting the double standards that Jasmine faces while also revealing how both characters struggle with the labels placed upon them and the inability to be seen as anything but those labels.
There are a lot of other great messages and themes that I think readers will relate to. Trying to live up to the expectations of others, struggling with family scrutiny and pressures, break-ups, taking a chance on love, healing, and forgiveness are all woven seamlessly through the plot. I like that, though the story tackles some tough issues, it’s balanced well with other more lighthearted and empowering moments.

The story is short and quick, and it has a lot of action, intrigue, a magical fairyland, curses, morally grey characters, and an epic enemies-to-lovers romance.
A quick and steamy romantasy, the story includes many recognizable fairy tale elements. From the magic mirror to the enchanted forest to the plethora of fantastical characters and creatures (love them, especially the mirror and the bird named Wolf!), the story feels steeped in tradition but has a fresh and spicy spin. It pulls from popular tales and has symbolic references and nods to stories like The Devil and the Three Golden Hairs, The Seven Ravens, Beauty and the Beast, Rumplestiltskin, and more.
Get a fan, my friends, because this is a steamy one! Ella and Casamir have electric chemistry, and the room heats up every time they’re together. If you like love/hate relationships with fantastic banter, heated exchanges, and even more heated romance, then you should definitely check this one out.
In addition to the spice, we also see both Casamir and Ella face their misgivings about love. Neither like being vulnerable and they resist fully opening up to each other. However, with all that chemistry zapping around, it proves difficult.
"She makes me feel like it won't matter if I have a name or not. So long as I know her, I will know myself." And I love how Casamir tries to get love and courting advice from anyone who will listen. The magic mirror, the house brownie, and even a prisoner is questioned, though Casamir is not good at following through with the advice he receives, and he fumbles and bumbles more than he succeeds. It’s so sweet to see this dark, brooding, and usually unfeeling male fall head over heels in love.
Ella isn’t much better at sharing her feelings and being courted, and she vacillates between being confused and angry, which makes for some tense and humorous scenes, as well as some heated arguments and misunderstandings. And the make-up time was super sexy. I loved every heated second!
I’m really interested in Casamir’s brothers and am hoping that each will be the focus of future books. I have a feeling they will each have a unique story to tell, and I’m eager to see how all of their stories tie together and who will be crowned the king of Fairyland.

Corrie This is such a fun and sexy story! It has a fresh and interesting premise, danger, adventure, and intrigue, and a fun rivals-to-lovers romance.
Corrie has total Lara Croft vibes. A badass archeologist, she is one of the best in her field, as is Ford, who is most definitely named after the actor who played Indiana Jones. They both have interesting backstories, and they also have a history together. Rivals to lovers romances are one of my faves, so I loved the chemistry, bickering, and banter between these two. They also have an opposites-attract dynamic that works really well. Both characters are brilliant, and the tension between them is so well done. It’s a great blend of comical, exasperating, and steamy.
I love all the fun pop culture references and the discussions about archeology and their specific dig. I also like that the story talks about the sexism, double standards, and gender and racial biases that Corrie faces in her field. Corrie spent much of her career trying to prove there was more to her than her voluptuous body, and as a Latina female, she hasn’t had all of the advantages as Ford, who fits the mold in this male-dominated world. These themes are relevant and realistic, and I think a lot of readers will find them relatable.
With the vivid and captivating setting and a fun and adventurous plot, the story is so engaging, and the mystery behind possible theft and deceit on their site adds to the tension. It’s a fun read and a great debut novel from Jo Segura! I can’t wait to read more by the author, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this book became a series. It definitely leaves open some possibilities, and I would love to see how Corrie and Ford’s story and adventures continue!

I never pass on a chance to read a contemporary romance set in a bookstore, and Nevermore Bookstore sounds charming. I also loved Cady. She’s such a great protagonist. She’s so upbeat and positive even though she’s going through so much. She’s mourning the loss of her beloved aunt, and she suffers from a chronic illness and chronic pain. She’s also fighting to keep a floundering bookstore afloat. Cady has a lot on her plate, but she is kind, generous, and selfless, and she never gives up fighting for the people and things she cares about. She’s pretty remarkable, and her introspection is admirable.
Then there’s Fox, Cady’s love interest. I so rooted for Fox, even though I didn’t love how he watched Cady from afar. It was a little strange and stalkery but totally understandable considering his PTSD and how debilitating it was for him. And his backstory is dark and made it almost impossible for him to be indoors. Throughout the whole book, I kept hoping he would get the help he needed because he was struggling on his own.
Cady and Fox have great chemistry, and though they both have a lot to work through and figure out, I was hopeful that they’d find a way to be together. I feel like they really understood each other, and I love that their relationship began with phone calls and book talks. I also loved when Cady called Fox out for pushing her away. She makes him face some hard truths, and, in turn, she faces her own. Their relationship has major grumpy/sunshine dynamics, and their romance is pretty steamy. That phone sex scene fogged up my kindle! lol
The story is not as light and fluffy as the cover suggests. it deals with some heavier topics like PTSD, chronic illness, small-town politics and greed, and financial stresses. However, these topics are balanced well with the comical banter, small-town charm, interesting secondary characters (especially Kevin Costner, the cat!), and the romance. And the ending is fantastic – so swoon-worthy and sweet, and Fox and Cady show how deeply they care for each other.

They are both shocked when, the next day, they see each other again and end up paired together for a new project at her work. Wyatt has just left his role in the government where he’s been a spy abroad for most of his adult life. Forced into retirement and now a civilian, he doesn’t exactly know what to do with himself. A talented artist, he is part of a competition at Blake’s work. Blake is a workaholic and has little time for much else. But when the two are paired together, they both come to realize that there’s more to life than work.
Wyatt and Blake have great chemistry from their first meeting, and you can tell there’s a strong connection between them. I love their easy banter and flirtations and how supportive Wyatt is of Blake and her work. There were times I wanted to shake Blake, particularly how insensitive she is about art and artists. She seemed a little judgmental, but I think as she learns more about Wyatt’s craft and talent, she becomes less single-minded in her views.
The story mostly takes place in a small town in Maine, which I loved. I’m always a sucker for a small town, and the citizens of this one are great. I enjoyed the secondary characters and how many of them welcome Wyatt so easily. It sounds like a charming place to live, and it’s extra special that Wyatt now lives in his aunt’s home.
The story has a bit of suspense too, but it’s not the focus of the novel. It added a bit of tension to the story, though I wish this aspect was a bit more developed. The focus really is on Wyatt and Blake and their growth, both as individuals and as a possible couple. I found Wyatt’s story really interesting, as he struggled with his new civilian life and seems a bit untethered. Being with Blake, living in this welcoming community, and living in his beloved aunt’s home definitely changes him.

Kitty Hart is a cat whisperer hired by Miles Thorn to care for his mother’s beloved cat as she faces long-term care at a facility. Kitty and Miles couldn’t be more different, and their meet-cute isn’t so cute. But once she sees Prince Francis, the troublesome feline, Kitty jumps at the chance to care for him even though she isn’t a fan of Miles. However, the more she gets to know Miles, the more Kitty realizes she might have prejudged him, and they slowly begin falling for each other.
There are a ton of cat puns at the start of the story since that is part of Kitty’s schtick, and they were purr-fect additions to the story. But once Miles gets to know her as more than a cat caretaker, Kitty’s cat persona drops, as do most of the puns. Kitty and Miles’s relationship progresses nicely from strangers to friends to more. Theirs isn’t a high-stakes, risky relationship filled with obstacles, but some of their obligations, insecurities, and emotional struggles, especially Miles’s stress at his new job and his mother’s health issues and Kitty’s stagnation and fear of change, stand in their way.
The story isn’t all lighthearted romance. It delves into grief in both Miles and Kitty’s pasts and details how that pain defines their present. Both lost loved ones when they were young, and those tragedies deeply affected them. These heavier themes contrast with the lighter, comical scenes. Miles and Kitty have a few laugh-out-loud scenes that totally made me chuckle. Kitty and Miles also have great friends, and I have a feeling many of them will have their own stories in the future. And a special shout out to Prince Francis for being my favorite character in the book! That cat is a rascal, and he stole the show in so many scenes. I’m not a big cat person, but I totally want a Prince Francis!
I do wish there were a bit more chemistry between the pair, though. Also, it took a while for me to warm up to Miles. He wasn’t the most likable character for me at first, and I didn’t love how he was with his mother for most of the book. That being said, he grew on me as the story developed and his character grew, and I think he and Kitty were good influences on each other. And the way he defended and supported Kitty when a social media situation threatens her livelihood was fantastic.
This is a purr-fect read if you like cat-tastic feline puns, awkward and funny friends-to-lovers romance, a great cast of secondary characters, and some deeper, more emotional themes. When I opened this book, I had no idea I was going to fall head over heels in love with it, but that’s exactly what I did. It’s a fantastic romantasy with dynamic characters, immersive world-building, and a super swoon-worthy romance!
This story pulled me in from the very first page, and I loved the author’s writing style. The world is developed and vivid without being overwhelming, the magic system and political unrest are intriguing, and the dialogue is excellent. It’s an easy story to get immersed in, and the characters make it even more compelling.
Arwen is such a layered protagonist, and she grows tremendously over the course of the story. A selfless and naive woman, she shows such bravery and strength. Taken by the Onyx King, a vicious leader with a vile reputation, Arwen is forced to work as a healer for his people. What first begins as a frightening incarceration turns into so much more. Arwen begins to see the people and leader as more than the villainous and evil enemies she’s been taught to believe in. She learns of the lies and manipulations, as well as the costs of war. She also makes several amazing friends, from the cantankerous mentor to a fellow prisoner to a new best friend.
Whether you know it or not, Arwen, there is a wild strength inside of you. You don’t need Ryder or Daga, or me, or anyone else to take care of you. Remember that. You are enough.
I firmly feel I need a friend like Mari. She is as fabulous as Arwen, Bubbly, curious, and so enthusiastic about everything. There’s a lot to love about her, and her friendship with Arwen is really special. Neither of them has ever really had friends, which makes their unexpected connection so lovely. And together, they are comical! I love how they tease each other and joke around. It felt very realistic, as did all of the characters. Griffin, They’re well-developed and interesting, and their personalities are all distinct and compelling. Of course, my favorite is the morally grey hunkalicious hottie, Kane.
Almost every time I read a romantasy, I fall in love with the MMC. Kane was super easy to fall in love with, and he quickly climbed to the top of my list of favorite book boyfriends. Kane is a mystery, and I’m a sucker for the tall, dark, and enigmatic. He has so much charisma that, frankly, I don’t know how Arwen resisted him. If I were his enemy, I would have given him everything he ever asked for, and I would have thanked him for taking it from me. Plus, every time he calls her “Little Bird,” I start fanning myself and wish I were a winged creature. lol I’m curious to learn more about him, especially after some of the revelations in this book! The story definitely delves more into Arwen’s life and past, and I have a feeling the next book will explore more of Kane’s.

The enemies-to-lovers romance between Arwen and Kane is EVERYTHING. Like EVERYTHING. I adore them so much! The sexual tension, the chemistry, THE BANTER!! Arwen and Kane have a complicated relationship filled with conflicted and confused emotions, and there are a lot of secrets between them. Their conversations – the way they flirt and tease each other, their more tender moments, the way he listens to her – it’s nuanced and layered and so fascinating to see this couple slowly let their guard down with each other. This is definitely a pair that should not care for each other, yet they are inexplicably drawn to each other over and over again. Every interaction adds to the slow-building swoon-tasticness!

I absolutely loved this story. With lies, betrayal, political intrigue, magic, and more, it is a brilliant epic romantasy and one I would highly recommend. Special thanks to the author for sending me a copy of the book. I loved it so much, I plan to buy a physical copy for my bookshelf.

Harper has a really cool job, which she is extremely good at. Like, really good. She has a special way of making her interviewees feel comfortable and willing to share. The behind-the-scenes look at the publishing world was very eye-opening. Frankly, her sexist boss is a fool for not seeing how gifted Harper is. She’s met so many people in the entertainment industry, but her life isn’t as glamorous as it sounds. She is in a cutthroat industry, and between the competition, misogyny, and total lack of support from her family, she often faces the pressures by herself and with her very close friends.
I loved Harper. She’s so kind and thoughtful, and she’s a great journalist who always goes the extra mile when interviewing and working with people. And she has such a positive attitude. I can’t imagine being as upbeat as her if my livelihood was threatened, an old love became my biggest competition, and my parents always disparaged me. Harper, however, is determined and independent, and she’s learned how to stand up for herself and what she wants in life. There are a few moments, especially with her parents, where I wanted to stand up and cheer for Harper.
Ryan’s great too, and though the story is told from Harper’s perspective, I feel like you really get to know him. He’s very much Harper’s opposite. A bit more uptight and formal, he’s organized, whereas she’s messy. He’s a planner, and she’s way more impulsive and free-spirited. But they’re both caring and thoughtful people. His parents are also great and such a contrast to Harper’s elitist and demeaning ones.
Harper and Ryan have a contentious relationship, and several flashbacks shed light on what happened between Harper and Ryan and why they haven’t spoken for many years. They have a complicated past, and some of the issues they had bleed into their present relationship. It’s interesting to see how they deal with miscommunication, work pressures, and more now that they are a bit older and wiser. There were parts of the story where I wanted to shake both of them and tell them to stop their constant bickering and be more open with each other, but I could totally understand why each was so hesitant to be more vulnerable with the other. They had fantastic chemistry, and, oh my word, some of their moments together are so comical. (The scene when they are driving the woman in labor to the hospital is hysterical!!)
I enjoyed the story. It’s an entertaining contemporary romance with bickering banter, great friendships, an independent protagonist dealing with drama in her work and personal life, and some great messages about taking charge of your life, setting boundaries, and forgiving.
