This novel deals with some serious medical issues, which is something that I am currently going through with 2 members of my family. It should have been the wrong book at the wrong time… yet somehow I found myself continuing to listen to it and be absorbed by it. It might have had something to do with the excellent narration? Or maybe I just really like this author’s style of writing?
For whatever reasons, I was not at all reluctant to listen to more, and actively sought it out every chance I got. I was contented with most of the story (even though I thought it was somewhat predictable), and was completely blown away by the last hour.
This was a short story that missed the mark for me. Unfortunately, the 3rd time was not the charm (my 3rd consecutive read by this author).

I was not interested in the story, and it contained too much stupid stuff.(view spoiler)[
"He was holding a wooden box, which Ella knew was filled with ethical dilemmas. This was a fun icebreaker that Captain trotted out each time, as a way of bringing the group together."
What? Who the hell thinks it would be "fun" to discuss ethical dilemmas with a group of strangers? Maybe about as much "fun" as discussing politics or religion?
"Ella knew what he was doing... Every year there was a guest who had a fear of heights and was cajoled into jumping from the upper deck. It was a party favorite of Captain's."
So why in the world would Ella admit to her fear of heights when she KNEW she would be made to jump? (hide spoiler)]...more

As a side note...
When the Queen dies, a global response plan named Operation London Bridge will be set in motion by her private secretary. Prime ministers and presidents will find out first, but the international press will follow soon after. At my newspaper, we have twelve days’ coverage ready to go. At the BBC they have prerecorded TV packages ready, and staff carry out emergency drills every few months. The armed forces are on standby, your local village radio station is primed. - The Love of My Life
Sadly, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed away 3 weeks ago at her home in Scotland. Since she was not in England at the time, it was actually Operation Unicorn that was initiated. (The Unicorn is the national animal of Scotland.)
Boris Johnson shared that he had been approached by the BBC weeks prior to the Queen's death, and asked to give an interview as if the Queen had already died. He said he couldn't do it.

It was interesting how the author constructed the story - Fi telling her side on a podcast, and Bram telling his in a Word document.

However, there are 3 main things I didn't quite accept: (view spoiler)[ • If Bram was going to commit suicide, why didn’t he do it BEFORE he sold the house? • Was it really that easy for Fiona to murder someone? • Yes, Merle “owed” Fiona, but wasn’t her participation a bit above and beyond? The story was much too short, and lacked charm. The ending felt very rushed, and left me feeling pretty unsatisfied.
I'm curious to see what #3 in the series will bring. Since I checked out a book bundle from the library (1 through 3), I'll continue on.

The narrator was absolutely marvelous, and had a different voice for each one of the characters. The story felt very “old-timie”, but since the author had her characters using text messages and internet searches, it obviously was more current. I lapped this story up with a spoon, and plan to continue straight on with more of the series.
So what didn’t I like about it? The ending. It felt like the author threw a dart and randomly selected one of the suspects. There really were no clues to speak of, and it easily could have been any one of them.
NOTE: I saw ‘The Mousetrap’ in London about 20 years ago, and loved it. I remember the audience being sworn to secrecy, that we would never give away anything about the ending of the play. I was SO worried that this book was going inadvertently let something slip about it, but thankfully, it didn’t.
