Synopsis: When 17-year-old Denny Tran is murdered at a local restaurant in Cabramatta, Australia, his older sister Ky comes back home searching for answers. What follows is a powerful and moving story about family bonds, loss, societal expectations and pressures, generational conflicts and an inner look at the Vietnamese-Australian experience during the 1990s.
Thoughts: I think this book is wrongly classified as a mystery/ thriller. While there is suspense, as it is centered around a crime, it is easy to figure out who committed Denny’s murder. Instead, this story is all about the process of getting to that point and wow, did I feel A LOT as I learned about these characters, their families and the challenges they faced both in Vietnam and Australia. Plus, while this was primarily told through Ky’s perspective, some chapters were narrated by those who witnessed the crime, but were unwilling to share what they knew to the police. Seeing these stories come together to build a larger narrative was eye-opening and felt authentic. I will say that the chapters are LONG and the beginning is slow, but I am happy that I read this debut!

What I loved: -The book is inspired by the story of John F. Kennedy and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy -It was the perfect balance between women's fiction and romance -There were dual POVs (and if you are planning to listen to the audiobook, the two narrators depicted the two characters perfectly) -The story takes place in the 1990s -The characters felt so real that at times I forgot this wasn't a true story
