I loved the way Liz could see exactly what was going on, where as Phil was an obtuse piece of sh*t. And the twist at the end was unexpected and yet kinda deflating. I wanted a big old nasty confrontation.
There's not much to say about this one. They've been together for 25+ years but I kinda wondered why. Phil didn't seem to have much to recommend him. Liz and Phil had marriage problems 2 years ago. And now he's texting the same woman again on a secret burner phone...
First of all, I think people need to know that she loses a baby in the 7th month. I never would have read it if I'd known tHorrible! I hated this book.
First of all, I think people need to know that she loses a baby in the 7th month. I never would have read it if I'd known that was part of the story.
Now I am going to rant a bit (view spoiler)[ It was Loooooooong, and lacked all the things I liked about the first book. It wasn't sexy. It wasn't romantic. I never felt a connection between the MCs at all. For much of the book they aren't even together! All kinds of crap about the OTT evil dude and his horde of evil minions. I couldn't have cared less!
The worst part was that she loses her baby in the 7th month in a horrific way. This actually happens 25% in after a huge jump in story that has you going WTF?!?! A lot of WTF moments intersperses with filler.
The author kept going on about how the Elves could jump in time if they wanted so I kept reading thinking they would somehow jump back and save her baby. NOT. Never happens. Tragic and even more tragic... I didn't really care by 90% in. (hide spoiler)]
So DNF at 90%. I did skim to see if there was any redeeming the story for me. NOPE. Unromantic and boring (took me weeks to read). Lots of buildups that just didn't pan out. World building that was ridiculously OTT with no intrigue whatsoever.
Laurann Dohner, "Coto's Captive" (Zorn Warriors #5); 3 stars Coto was the hunk that helped save Brenda when she ran away with Rever in "Tempting Rever"Laurann Dohner, "Coto's Captive" (Zorn Warriors #5); 3 stars Coto was the hunk that helped save Brenda when she ran away with Rever in "Tempting Rever". I wondered if he'd ever get his HEA, and here it is. After crash landing on Earth along with the ship of pirates they had been chasing, Coto ends up getting attacked by vicious dogs while trying to find his superior who landed in an escape pod. Lynn works for animal control and responds to a call from the loser owner of the crazed dogs. She heads off into the woods to find the mysterious animal who fought off the dogs. Lots of assumptions and silly attempts at subterfuge later, and Lynn finds herself helping Coto and falling for him at the same time. It's sweet, but not as much fun as the first 4 books. It just seemed a bit too easy at the end I guess. But I still enjoyed reading about Coto getting his girl.
Leora Gonzales, "Bridal Bonds" (Bridal Pact #1.5); 2 stars This is the sequel to Bridal Pact, which I haven't read. I'd like to read it but find the price a bit prohibitive. I didn't think this story was written well enough to charge so much. But this was a fun story for the most part. It was darker than I was expecting, because it comes across as fluff. This is not a good thing. It made the dark parts of the story feel slapped on. (view spoiler)[ miscarriages and killing off key characters, does not automatically give a story more weight. Who the heck are the bad guys anyways, other than a convenient plot device??? Plus the fact that these technologically superior aliens walk around in leather pants is a real head scratcher... (hide spoiler)] Andi was a bride for a Phaeton Alien named Zane. The Phaetons have a pact with Earth to take any willing women in exchange for healthcare technology. When Zane and Andi met, they realized there was no 'zing'. So they remain friends, but there are two other aliens who would love to step in as her Husbands. Menage is not my thing, and this didn't change my mind. It's a decent 'Mars needs Women' type story, but nothing special. I can't say as I felt a 'zing' for any of the characters.
Jade Black, "No Way Out" (Trek Mi Q'an #11); dnf I just couldn't finish this one, and there didn't seem much point to. Unless you want to buy the serial sequels to follow. I read several from this series ages ago, and it was titillating but not much more. The stories were sloppy and often hard to follow. I kinda remembered the loose end from one of the stories that this one follows. But frankly there were so many loose ends, I gave up reading her books.
Tara Nina, "Escape"; 4 stars I really enjoyed this story, although again, it is an introduction to a series and so doesn't actually have an HEA but more of an HFN. Still I liked the characters and the world building. Shia kicks ass and there are alluring hints to her background that promise more good stories to come. Kal is pretty cool too and there were twists to the plot that I didn't see coming. Basically, Hell isn't really what we think it is, but an intergalactic jail and Shia is a Paoni. They are the guards set to stop the prisoners from escaping and the humans from finding out about the extraterrestrials. Each Paoni has a specific region that they police and Shia's is the middle of nowhere. But sure enough, here comes a warning and out of the ground come 3 criminals set to escape. She kicks butt but one of the criminals isn't the usual. There's intrigue, deception, corruption and good action and a sweet set up for more books to come. ...more
Mia and Kumar. I got about 20% and then pretty much guessed the plot. So I skimmed the rest, only to find that is was indeed annoyingly predictable. IMia and Kumar. I got about 20% and then pretty much guessed the plot. So I skimmed the rest, only to find that is was indeed annoyingly predictable. I realize she is only 22 and he is unbearably ancient, but he is also an asshat who seems to view her as a beloved pet, and she is tstl. The author also likes to blah blah blah for pages about quasi science. Even the Greek Gods were involved, for crying out loud. The plot thrives on misunderstandings and lack of communication. How is making your characters stupid, going to endear the reader??? How can I identify with the heroine when she has the reasoning power of the dumb blond on a tv sit com,... but isn't funny? In fact, this book is entirely too serious! (view spoiler)[ Then, to top it all off, she never figures it out, or even suspects that she is being led around by the nose with very little evidence. She has to be saved by her 'alien daddy' who knew all along. Excuse me while I puke... (hide spoiler)] Worst heroine EVER!!!...more
