No sabía muy bien que esperar, tal vez algo similar a "El dador de recuerdos", dado esto de que el protagonista es aprendiz de una anciana que, justamente, trabaja con libros de recuerdos; pero claramente no me esperaba ESTO. Creo que la mejor manera de leer el libro es sin saber bien de qué trata y dejar que te sorprenda, por lo que si todavía no lo leíste, te recomiendo que no leas esta reseña.
En general el libro me gustó. Es un concepto muy interesante el de que haya gente que plasme, literalmente, los recuerdos de las personas en libros y así liberarlos de los recuerdos que ya no quieren. Sin embargo, me hubiera gustado que se ahonde más en eso: ¿Cómo nace un encuadernador? ¿De dónde viene esa "magia"? ¿Por qué los quisieron matar hace algunos años? ¿Qué hace que un encuadernador sea mejor que otro? ¿Por qué los libros son peligrosos, si al fin y al cabo son solo memorias de otras personas? ¿Por qué a Emmett le da esa fiebre de encuadernador encuadernado? ¿Qué son las sombras que siempre ve por el rabillo del ojo? Tenía mucho material para desarrollarse en worldbuiling, y siento que apenas nos mostraron una ventana de lo que podría ser ese mundo. El comienzo es un tanto lento, con Emmett aprendiendo a ser un encuadernador, tantos secretos ocultos que no quieren decirle y personajes que al principio no entendemos qué rol jugarán más adelante. Sin embargo, la segunda mitad... Ufff. Como dije, no me esperaba nada que se tratara más bien de un libro de romance que de uno de fantasía. Lamentablemente el desarrollo de personaje es casi nulo, debido a que la segunda mitad del libro se da en el pasado, y el Emmett de la primera parte y la tercera parecen personas completamente diferentes. En conclusión, es un libro que me gustó bastante, pero siento que se le podría haber sacado muchísimo más provecho. Un gran punto a favor que tiene es que es una novela muy atmósferica, que te hace sumergirte en esos talleres de encuadernación, en las casas aristocráticas y en el campo; la autora tiene una forma muy bonita de narrar. Las tres protagonistas de esta historia (la tía Lydia, Agnes y Daisy) tienen voces muy diferentes entre sí, y no lo digo solo por sus vivencias tan particulares y porque en el audiolibro que escuché cada una tiene una actriz de voz diferente. Las tres tienen historias individuales bastante interesantes, aunque la que más me llamó la atención fue la de la tía Lydia, porque tenemos una gran parte de su vida escrita a su propio puño y letra y te permite entender por qué tomó las decisiones que tomó y las cosas que hizo, mas no lleva directamente a empatizar con ella (lo cual agradezco, porque la odio mucho dslfkjds a pesar del gran personaje que es). Fuera de eso... la trama principal, cuando las tres historias se chocan, me aburrió bastante, e incluso carente de sentido. Margaret Mead es una de mis antropólogas favoritas, no solo por su teoría, sino por su vertiginosa vida que es tan interesante, por lo que cuando me eMargaret Mead es una de mis antropólogas favoritas, no solo por su teoría, sino por su vertiginosa vida que es tan interesante, por lo que cuando me enteré que existía una novela basada en un periodo de su vida, no dudé en tirarme de lleno a leerla. Lily King toma un corto periodo de tiempo en el que Mead pasó con su segundo esposo, el antropólogo Reo Fortune, y quien luego sería su tercer (y último) esposo, el también antropólogo Gregory Bateson, en el río Sapik en 1933, pero hasta ahí llegan las similitudes de estas personas con los personajes Nell, Fen y Bankson, quienes han desarrollado personalidades propias con pequeños toques de realidad, al igual que las tribus que este trío investiga, que también son ficticias. Creo que la autora tomó una buena decisión al no convertir esta novela en un libro de ficción histórica que se ciña lo más parecido a la realidad posible, ya que es muy fácil cometer errores al intentar describir una tribu. También es bueno porque hace que los personajes se sientan más democratizados, aptos para todo público, porque no hay que tener conocimientos en antropología para leer este libro. Porque, claro, al tratarse de un triángulo amoroso entre tres antropólogos en situación de trabajo de campo, las descripciones etnográficas rellenan la mayor parte del libro. Debo admitir que Lily King hizo un trabajo excepcional al escribir cómo los tres trabajaban, porque me trasladé perfectamente a la antropología de los años, cuando recién estaba comenzando a describirse la diversidad cultural y la tolerancia étnica, de la mano de Frank Boas, pero sin terminar de abandonar la forma de trabajo de sus antepasados, como tener "sirvientes" dentro de la tribu que les cocinen, laven la ropa y les construyan la casa en la que vivirán los próximos meses que dure su investigación. Nell es una antropóloga relativista estadounidense hecha y derecha, con sus reflexiones, preguntas y descripciones, del mismo modo que se nota que Bankson pertenece a la escuela inglesa; creo que si uno no está dentro de la materia es algo bastante complicado de describir, tan ceñido a la realidad de la época, por lo que la investigación de la autora en el tema es palpable. Un buen dato es que se mencionan varios antropólogos reales, como Boas, Malinowski o Evans-Pritchard. Como menciono, las descripciones se llevan el premio en este libro. Podés verte a vos misma caminando a través del camino de las mujeres de los tam con Nell, haciendo preguntas y curioseando, queriendo aprender más y más sobre estas personas que parecen tan diferentes, a pesar del calor aplastante y los bichos que se te pegan a la piel. Euforia, como Nell diría. Sin embargo, los personajes se sintieron bastantes flojos. La narración está dividida entre la primera persona de Bankson, los cuadernos de notas de Nell y un POV tercera persona que la sigue a ella, y aún así se sienten distantes. Su construcción es bastante pobre, no solo por el romance (que, personalmente, era por lo que estaba más interesada en leer), sino por los conflictos entre los tres, sus accionares, sus reflexiones internas. Siento que nunca puedo conectar con ellos o que su dolor o alegría me interese. El personaje que más me interesó creo que fue Fen, porque era aquel que construía conflicto y reaccionaran de una forma u otra; en cambio Bankson es un ser bastante pasivo, y teniendo en cuenta que la mitad del libro estamos dentro de su cabeza, no llegué a empatizar casi nada (supongo que en parte es porque él mismo se sentía como un extraño dentro del matrimonio de Nell y Fen, a pesar de que quería desesperadamente su cercanía). En cuanto al final... no me gustó mucho, o al menos no era lo que esperaba. Se me hizo bastante facilón/deux machina. No me lo esperaba ni en mil años. Todavía me estoy debatiendo si el libro es un 3,5 o un 4.
PD: Empecé el libro creyendo que se trataba de un triángulo amoroso entre Mead/Fortune/Ruth Benedict, por lo que me llevé una gran decepción al iniciarlo lol, pero no por eso fue menos interesante. Me explico: quise leer este libro desde la primera vez que ví la portada, casi un año antes de su publicación, porque tiene todos los elementos combinados para que una novela me guste: romance, enemies to lovers (ponele) escritores rivales (ponele la rivalidad) y un escenario pintoresco en una playa (que apenas tuvo protagonismo; hubiera sido mejor que como portada pongan una escena de You belong with me de Taylor Swift). Por lo tanto tenía las expectativas POR LAS NUBES, estaba totalmente convencida de que iba a ser de mis mejores lecturas del año. Y la realidad es que fue bastante meh. No es malo. Tampoco es una obra de arte. Meh. De enemies to lovers no tiene absolutamente nada, y ya como que me estoy cansando de que vendan libros con este trope cuando son nada que ver. Me costó bastante agarrarle el ritmo, sobretodo porque no podía conectar bien con los personajes, sobre todo con Gus, que se me hacía tan distante. Por la mitad me quedé bastante estancada porque me gustaba la tensión que había entre ellos pero no la trama en la que se estaba desarrollando, je. Pax es un libro que significa mucho para mí y cuando me enteré de esta secuela, casi me desmayo de la emoción. Si bien el principio me pareció un poco lento, lloré cada dos capítulos sin estar segura de por qué lloraba, teniendo en cuenta que nada particularmente triste pasaba. La forma en la que Pax y Peter tuvieron que superarse a sí mismos y pudieron ayudarse, cómo Peter logró perdonarse a sí mismo y avanzar en su viaje en retrospectiva para después poder hacer del mundo un lugar mejor... Quedé destrozada. El final me hizo bosta en todo sentido. Me hubiera gustado que haya más escenas con Vola, porque es de mis personajes favoritos de la vida, pero entiendo que este es un viaje de sanación para Peter. Los nuevos personajes (Jade y Samuel) me encantaron y me dieron mucha ternura ❤️ Siendo honesta, la puntuación es más sobre el cariño que le tengo a la historia y los personajes que otra cosa. No siento que la secuela haya sido necesaria; creo que el final del primer libro cerró perfecto. Siento que no me tocó tantas fibras sensibles como el primero (también puede ser porque lo leí en inglés y hay cosas que no siempre entendía y me daba flojera traducir) pero aún así estoy feliz y satisfecha.

Creo que el punto central de este libro no es la trama en sí, sino los personajes y el contexto en el que se desarrolla. Estoy fascinada de cómo Suzanne escribió sobre Coriolanus Snow, el villano principal de la saga que, ahora con 18 años, podemos ver los primeros brotes de maldad y sus razones. Lo mejor de todo esto es que no es un villano irracional con motivado por la venganza u odio hacia algo en particular, sino que todas sus acciones (buenas y malas) tienen una razón de ser. Suzanne no nos insta a empatizar con él, pero sí a entenderlo, lo cual es tremendamente complicado de escribir. Además, Coriolanus es un personaje multifacético, con dudas sobre el sistema en el que vive, por más de que sea una posición privilegiada (dentro de Panem, pero no tanto desde el capitolio mismo) y cómo debe ir sorteando los obstáculos morales que se le van presentando. El único personaje que no me convencía al principio era Sejanus, porque su voz rebelde me parecía que no era orgánica con la trama, ya que siempre tenía que ir en contra de cualquier cosa que hubiera en el capitolio, aunque poco a poco me fui encariñando con él. Aparte de que Coriolanus y él son tremendos trolos el uno por el otro. Lucy Gray me gustó mucho también, pero como que no me llegué a conectar mucho con ella. Creo que es un buen libro, pero tiene mucho potencial desperdiciado.
Desde la sinopsis se nos presenta como un retelling o una reimaginación de Drácula y sus novias, esas tres vampiros que viven con él en Transilvania y atormentan a Jonathan a lo largo de la novela original. Sin embargo, me costó mucho encontrar (si es que alguna vez pude) a ese Drácula original, o siquiera al vampiro gótico de la novela. Desde el ya, en este libro Constanta, nuestra protagonista, nos cuenta (o más bien, le cuenta a él) que asesinó a su creador, un hombre sin nombre ("tú") a quien amó desde el momento que la creó. Claramente, este hombre se supone que es Drácula, aunque ya es de saber general que él no murió a manos de sus novias. A partir de ahí Constanta nos cuenta toda su vida, desde el momento que es transformada, su adoración a ese vampiro, la creación de sus otros dos amantes y hermanos, la evolución de sus relaciones y el porqué del asesinato que primero nos dijo. A esta trayectoria de alrededor de seis siglos más o menos, Constanta fue totalmente devota a su esposo y creador, hasta que las cosas se empiezan a torcer. Es una lastima que la autora no haya aprovechado todas las oportunidades que tenía a la mano para revivir a este tipo vampiro tan famoso: las transformaciones en animales, la hipnosis, el control de los elementos, la necesidad del espacio sagrado para descansar durante el día. Simplemente se quedó con la idea general del vampiro hedonico que chupa sangre y no puede tocar la luz del día y eso me enoja un poco porque HABÍA TANTAS POSIBILIDADES PARA HACER LA HISTORIA MUCHO MÁS INTERESANTE. Creo que podría haber sido más un retelling del cuento Barba Azul ft. vampiros. Creo que lo que más destaco de la historia, y como que casi me deja pasar su falta de trama (lo único que hacen es ir de acá para allá y ya), es la relación compleja entre los cuatro personajes principales. Constanta siente devoción por esposo, y él la ama a ella por encima de sus otros dos amantes, que a la vez son también amantes y "hermanos" de Constanta. Me gusta cómo está tratada la relación poliamorosa, porque las uniones entre los personajes va más allá de lo sexual, y a su vez cada uno se relaciona de diferente manera con los otros. Los celos, lo erótico de la relación entre los cuatro, las pocas alegrías, el amor platónico o puro que hay entre algunos, la camadería entre ellos tres es muy buena. Además del papel que se le da a las relaciones abusivas y que no es tan fácil salir de ellas (aún más si sos un ser sobrenatural inmortal(?) También es muy muy destacable la prosa de la autora. Tiene una forma de contar las cosas que se lee como seda, sumado a que tiene capítulos cortos. Marqué muchas frases, algunas de mis favoritas son:
