Probablemente el libro más duro que me tocó leer en lo que va de mi vida. Por supuesto que sabía de la participación de las mujeres en la segunda guerra mundial, pero desconocía totalmente la perspectiva soviética de la guerra y el rol de las mujeres en la lucha. Desde lavanderas, cocineras y doctoras hasta tiradoras, conductoras de tanque y trenes, este libro no es un libro de Historia que cuenta la guerra a través de puntos claves, sino que lo hace a través de los relatos viscerales de las mujeres que participaron en todos los frentes. Según este libro, un millón de mujeres participaron en el frente de batalla soviético en aquella época. Por como se cuenta, podrían haber sido mil millones de ellas. En cada escuadrón había grupos grandes de mujeres, chicas que se enlistaban con sus amigas y hermanas, una cadena enorme de mujeres que parece llegar hasta la infinidad. El libro tiene muy poco análisis y la voz de la autora es casi nula, ya que se hace un recorrido siguiendo diferentes temáticas sobre las vivencias personales de las entrevistadas. Cada relato es más desgarrador que el anterior y ninguna experiencia es igual a la otra: mientras una relata que la guerra fueron los años más felices de su vida, otra menciona que no ha podido volver a dormir bien después de 40 años. La única experiencia colectiva que hay entre ellas es que no se esperaban a la crueldad a la que se enfrentarían. El libro está plegado de sangre, dolor, mucho frío, hambre y, a veces, risas y amor. La manera en la que se cuentan los hechos no es morbosa, con miembros volando por los aires y tiros por todos lados, sino cruda porque así es como son las cosas, esas chicas sobrevivían e intentaban mirar para adelante.

La experiencia femenina es inherentemente diferente a la masculina, sobre todo en esos tiempos. En un momento una de ellas relataba que las mujeres vivieron dos guerras: a la que fueron y la que tuvieron que transitar una vez que la guerra como tal acabó. Porque ¿quién querría casarse con una soldado? Mutilarse era de las peores cosas porque quién querría formar una familia con una chica a la que le faltaban las piernas, por ejemplo. Muchas decían que preferían morir antes que tener que vivir así. Incluso algunas ocultaron su participación en la guerra por esa misma razón. Además, también estaban las necesidades femeninas: la menstruación seguía llegado y no había higiene necesaria para cubrirla, las botas no estaban preparadas para pies pequeños, y ni siquiera tenían ropa interior adecuada. Cuando regresaron, las medallas que recibieron de poco sirvieron en el día a día porque el país no las trató como heroínas, sino como unas putas y poco a poco fueron eclipsadas por sus pares masculinos:
“Los hombres no abrían la boca y las mujeres... nos gritaban: “¡Sabemos lo que estuvisteis haciendo allí! Os insinuasteis a nuestros hombres con vuestros chochos jóvenes. Sois las putas del frente... Perras militares...”

Durante la guerra, muchas mujeres dejaron de ser mujeres, pero tampoco se convirtieron en hombres. Estaban en un limbo, un espacio indeterminado que ocupaban como soldados. Los lugareños no las reconocían como mujeres cuando entraban a un pueblo, e incluso sus propios hijos no reconocían a sus madres cuando estas tenían puesto el uniforme. En los grupos, los hombres las reconocían como "hermanas" o pares, no como "mujeres objetos de deseo", alguien con quien pasar el resto de su vida. Una de las chicas guardó unos aros de casa y se los ponía por la noche porque estaba desesperada por volver a verse como mujer o hacer tareas femeninas. Por supuesto que hubo amor, y algunas se casaron con los soldados de su mismo grupo o incluso se enlistaron con sus maridos. Aún así, no faltan los maridos que, durante las entrevistas, no quieren que sus esposas cuenten sus experiencias, o les dicen que se remitan a los "hechos", como si sus vivencias no fueran válidas. El libro está plegado de sentimientos, desde el horror más puro hasta la viveza de la juventud, ya que muchas de ellas se enlistaron voluntariamente con los 16 años apenas cumplidos, incluso menos, se dejaban llevar por la euforia del momento e Iban en grupo, con sus amigas, esperando casi que fuera un juego infantil y que las dejaran en el mismo lugar. Todas volvieron a sus hogares siendo personas diferentes, algunas con el pelo blanco a pesar de la edad y sin poder relacionarse debidamente con sus amigas de su misma edad, porque la guerra las había hecho madurar de un día para otro.
Por más de que se intente dar una nueva perspectiva a la guerra, el libro peca de censurado. Entiendo que de otra forma no podría haber salido a la luz, ya que se publicó por primera vez 6 años antes de que la Unión Soviética se disolviera. El libro habla constantemente del amor a la patria, de como la gran mayoría fue por voluntad propia porque sentían la necesidad de defender a su tierra en vez de quedarse en casa de brazos cruzados, y que muchas hicieron hasta lo imposible para que las enlistaran. Se habla maravillas del ejército soviético, de la camadería que había entre ellos y como intentaban que el ánimo no bajara. Sin embargo, se dejan ver algunos vestigios de la verdadera crueldad de la situación, casi siempre justificados: Hombres forzados a ir a los campos de trabajo luego de terminada la guerra, las violaciones de los soldados porque "las mujeres escaseaban", los horrores que cometieron al entrar a la alemania nazi con las mujeres de allí, padres que entregaban a sus hijas a la guerra por Stalin, gente excluida de la sociedad y considerada sospechosa por haber vivido en territorio ocupado, madres que usaban a sus propios hijos en las misiones porque la causa es más grande que cualquier vida...
(Censor) "Para usted, la verdad está en la vida. En la calle. Bajo nuestros pies. Para usted es tan baja, tan terrenal. Pues se equivoca, la verdad es lo que soñamos. ¡Es cómo queremos ser!"
En conclusión no es un libro que todo el mundo pueda leer debido a que es muy fuerte y es imposible que cada tanto no te ponga la piel de gallina, pero es totalmente necesario para entender que las mujeres siempre hemos estado ahí, por más de que nos quieran borrar de la historia....more

Pax es un libro que significa mucho para mí y cuando me enteré de esta secuela, casi me desmayo de la emoción. Si bien el principio me pareció un poco lento, lloré cada dos capítulos sin estar segura de por qué lloraba, teniendo en cuenta que nada particularmente triste pasaba. La forma en la que Pax y Peter tuvieron que superarse a sí mismos y pudieron ayudarse, cómo Peter logró perdonarse a sí mismo y avanzar en su viaje en retrospectiva para después poder hacer del mundo un lugar mejor... Quedé destrozada. El final me hizo bosta en todo sentido. Me hubiera gustado que haya más escenas con Vola, porque es de mis personajes favoritos de la vida, pero entiendo que este es un viaje de sanación para Peter. Los nuevos personajes (Jade y Samuel) me encantaron y me dieron mucha ternura ❤️ Siendo honesta, la puntuación es más sobre el cariño que le tengo a la historia y los personajes que otra cosa. No siento que la secuela haya sido necesaria; creo que el final del primer libro cerró perfecto. Siento que no me tocó tantas fibras sensibles como el primero (también puede ser porque lo leí en inglés y hay cosas que no siempre entendía y me daba flojera traducir) pero aún así estoy feliz y satisfecha.

La prosa de Benjamin siempre me hace sentir en casa, arropada, pero también es como una cachetada para despertar. Benditas sean sus manos, bendito sea Dios por darle el don de transmitir tanto en tan pocas palabras. Me costó separar un poco la voz de Sammy de la de Aristóteles, que es único otro libro que leí del autor. Ambos son chicos introvertidos, que quieren cambiar las cosas pero no saben cómo, aplicados y un poco bastante enojados con el mundo. Hasta la forma de expresarse (las frases cortas y repetitivas, sin muchas descripciones) son bastante similares. Sin embargo, a medida que pasa el libro, Sammy va tomando rumbo en su propia historia. Creo que es el libro con más crítica social de Benjamin. Se tratan muchos temas que sucedían a finales de los años 60: la guerra de Vietnam, la homofobia, las diferencias sociales y raciales, los cambios sociales, la liberación sexual, el feminismo implícito, etc. Pero todo se siente tan... Mundano. Estamos viendo apenas a través de una ventana en la vida de un Sammy de 17-18 años, un momento específico de su vida donde él mismo nos cuenta las cosas que vivió durante su adolescencia. Benjamin tiene un talento para contar cosas cotidianas y que se sientan como actos importantes. Porque, bueno, ninguno de los personajes son héroes, todos son chicos normales que van al colegio, a trabajar, tienen interés por otra persona y lo pierden rápidamente. Como cualquier otro adolescente. Si bien lo sentí un poco lento (en sí en el libro no pasan grandes cosas que dan giros a la trama, simplemente es la vida fluyendo), tengo la creencia de que sus libros se aprecian mejor con una segunda leída. Me gustó Sammy como personaje principal, pero no llegué a conectar con los demás personajes secundarios, sino que los veía como marionetas de la trama. Aunque sí me dolió varias cosas que les sucedieron, me causaron esa impresión porque a Sammy le dolió. Sí me gustó mucho el personaje de Gigi, porque el autor suele centrarse en sus personajes masculinos, pero Gigi es una absoluta reina y revolucionaria para la época. Es que... Dios. Sammy es un chico al que le pasan tantas cosas que están fuera de su control y es obligado a crecer tan rápido, empezando ya desde la muerte de su madre cuando era un niño, que me duele un montón. Tiene mucha ira dentro suyo, y con razón. No me sentí tan cercano a él a nivel personal como me pasó con Ari, pero aún así pude empatizar. Pero Sammy aprende a vivir a través de ese dolor, o al menos con él. Convivir con las cosas feas que le pasan, y si está en su poder, cambiarlas para mejor. Cuestionarse lo que le pasa a él y a sus amigos y compañeros. Permitirse estar enojado y también controlar esa ira que lo invade. Permitirse estar triste y aún así poder sobrellevarlo. Quise abrazarlo en todo momento.
Este es, sobretodo un libro sobre las pequeñas cosas. Pequeñas personas en un pequeño barrio viviendo sus vidas, enamorándose, yendo a la guerra, llorando, riendo, planeando el futuro, dándose cuenta que las cosas no son siempre como uno quisiera. Es un libro sobre cómo las pequeñas cosas pueden ser el principio para cambios más grandes, y como esas cositas afectan radicalmente a las personas.
*****Posible SPOILER**** Nunca llegué a entender por qué Juliana está en el título de la novela si se muere como en la página 50, y si bien Sammy la extraña y piensa de vez en cuando en ella, no es central para la trama ??? Ni siquiera llegué a encariñarme y extrañarla....more

Estoy tan pero tan orgullosa y agradecida con Alice por tratar los desórdenes alimenticios (y la salud mental en general) de una forma tan respetuosa, completa, ilustrativa y correcta. Me sorprende ver que creo que es una de las mejores representaciones que ví en los medios en general. Es tan importante, y espero que inspire a mucha gente, sea que esté pasando una situación similar a la de Charlie o a la de Nick (la participación de Nick! Es tan hermoso y desolador ver lo que él tiene que pasar a la vez, y como quiere ayudar a Charlie, además de pasar sus propios problemas personales). El amor no puede curar una enfermedad mental, porque se necesita más que un novio, también se necesita profesionales, pero una una mano amiga y la familia pueden hacer maravillas en el proceso de recuperación. Ningún otro personaje se podrá equiparar con lo que me transmiten y lo que siento por Addie y Henry. Una parte de mí desea haber podido escrito este libro yo misma porque pocas cosas han resonado tan profundamente en mí como esta historia, pero creo que jamás habría sido capaz de poner todo esto en palabras, del mismo modo que ahora no soy capaz de escribir una reseña que contenga todos los sentimientos que llevo dentro.
1/3/21, ya más cuerda. Just wow. Tengo muchas cosas que decir de este libro y no sé por dónde empezar. Adeline "Addie" LaRue es una chica de veintipocos que vive en un pueblito pequeño de la Francia rural en 1714. Harta de su vida provincial y deseosa de poder experimentar más (inserte aquí la canción de la bella y la bestia quiero más que vida provinciiiiaaaaal), una noche hace un pacto desesperado con un dios que no debería haber llamado. A partir de ahí Addie es capaz de vivir tanto tiempo como lo desee, pero el problema es que nadie es capaz de recordarla y ella no puede dejar ninguna huella. Hasta que, 300 años después, un chico es capaz de recordarla. En sí misma, la historia no es nada nuevo: una chica que se manda una cagada con el diablo y ahora debe enfrentar las consecuencias. Pero, a mí entender, lo que hace que la novela sea especial es cómo está narrada. Los pov de Addie y Henry tienen tonos tan nostálgicos por diferentes razones que se te mete en el pecho y poder sentir el peso de los años y la soledad en los huesos. Los personajes son totalmente entrañables y te podés identificar fácilmente con ellos (personalmente me identifiqué con Henry por sus miedos y con Addie por sus deseos). Básicamente es un libro que hit too close to home y eso no te dejará indiferente (y tiene unas frases matadoras que te hacen replantearte qué estás haciendo con tu vida). La relación que más me gustó dentro del libro fue la de Addie y Luc (la oscuridad). El constante tire y afloje a lo largo de los siglos, los coqueteos con doble intenciones y la arrogancia de ambos me mató. Si bien lo de Addie y Henry es bastante insta-love (algo que detesto) esta vez me gustó muchísimo, porque ambos se complementan y son todo lo que el otro quiere y/o necesita. Plus, es la primera vez que leo un libro donde ambos protagonistas son bisexuales, aunque la relación sea hetero. En cuanto al final, me gustó mucho la verdad. Me lo veía venir, aunque no de la manera en que se desarrolló. El final es un poco abierto, pero espero que Victoria no haga una segunda parte (bueno sí) porque se da a entender bastante bien cómo seguirá el curso de las cosas. Y sí, lloré un poco porque me dejó una crisis existencial tremenda sobre qué mierda estoy haciendo con mi miserable vida. Plus que me encantó: las obras de arte que aparecen al inicio de cada parte. Es una forma hermosa de contar cómo Addie ha dejado su huella en el mundo y cómo esas personas la han marcado a ella
Ahora bien. No todo en este libro me gustó, y por eso tiene 4 estrellas en vez de 5, aunque esté entre mis mejores lecturas del año. El libro está narrado entre flashbacks y cosas que pasan en el presente (2014). Lado bueno: los capítulos son cortitos (4, 5 páginas) y se pasa rápido (de hecho, creo que por eso mismo fue que leía 30 pag sin darme cuenta). Lado malo: ambos tiempos no tienen nada que ver. Me explico: los flashbacks del pasado son lo que yo llamo "Addie en lugares" (o "Henry en lugares" pero los de él son la excepción xd). Básicamente son 300 de 500 páginas de Addie viviendo su hedónica vida siendo la musa de artistas y acostándose con ellos en un lugar X de Europa (o Estados Unidos, porque claramente la chica que quiere conocer el mundo y vivir experiencias nuevas no va a pensar salir de Occidente primermundista), se lamenta de que no la recuerdan, viene Luc a preguntarle si ya se rindió, ella responde que no y que se vaya a la mierda. Listo. Eso es todo. Y el ciclo vuelve a empezar. Al principio sí me gustaron todos estos flashbacks porque me permitían ver a Addie en sus primeros años de la maldición y ver cómo le costaba arreglárselas sin un techo donde vivir o una mano amiga, pero luego se volvió un tedio al no tener un hilo conductor entre los capítulos. Me hubiera gustado mucho más si todos esos flashbacks estuvieran unidos y conectados de alguna forma con el presente (ya en las últimas 80 pag todo empieza a cobrar un poco más de sentido, pero eso no quita el embole que me pegué en la primera parte del libro). Después, siento que Addie no evolucionó en 300 años. Yo leo una parte del año 2014 y una de 1760 y encuentro a la misma chica, solo que un poco más triste. Me gusta que conserve su espíritu, pero me hubiera gustado ver a una Addie más quebrada, cansada y, por qué no, loca. Nadie conserva la cordura estando 300 años completamente sola en el mundo. Siento que es un libro que se podría haber explotado mucho más, porque si quito la hermosa forma de narrar y cuánto me identifico con los personajes, me encuentro con una historia muy simple donde no pasan demasiadas cosas. Me hubiera gustado ver otro tipo de interacción con Luc, además de la arrogancia y los sentimientos primitivos que los invadían a ambos cuando estaban juntos. I mean, es un dios. Le faltó algo más. Henry es perfecto, no encuentro nada de qué quejarme. Es mi novio. Mi sol. La luz de mis ojos. Nunca ha hecho nada malo en su vida y se merece todo el amor del universo.
Así que mi recomendación sería que lean el libro, porque a mí me gustó mucho, pero no vayan con el hype por las nubes porque se van a caer por el precipicio. Tómenlo con calma.
Pd: adoro que la portada sea mate y como suavecita al tacto, pero quedan todos los dedos marcados y me estresa ahre

Es complicado para mí hacer una reseña que le haga justicia y pueda transmitir todo lo que esta duología significa para mí. Ya lo he dicho muchas veces, pero Benjamin es uno de mis escritores favoritos porque sus libros siempre llegan a mis manos en el momento indicado, casi por arte de magia, como si el universo nos tuviera destinados. Leí por primera vez "Aristóteles y Dante descubren los secretos del universo" en el 2015, cuando yo tenía quince años. Pude empatizar con Ari en casi todos sus aspectos, porque todo lo que él pensaba y sentía, era casi lo mismo que a mí también me pasaba. El año pasado volví a releer el libro después de unos cuantos años, con miedo de que no me gustara tanto porque ya una persona diferente, y me sorprendió lo mucho que todavía podía identificarme con él. Vengo esperando este libro desde que el autor lo anunció, y, a pesar de haber pasado casi siete años desde la primera vez que me encontré con estos personajes, me alegro que haya pasado tanto tiempo, porque ahora Ari y yo somos personas diferentes desde aquella vez. Ambos hemos aprendido a crecer, a dejar que nos amen y a no tenerle miedo a las lágrimas, por más de que sigamos con miles de inseguridades de las que nunca nos libraremos, pero estamos aprendiendo a vivir con ellas. ¿Era necesaria una secuela? No. El final del primer libro fue perfecto, pero yo era la que necesitaba este libro en este momento específico de mi vida. Es un sentimiento extraño, pero mientras lo leía sentía que Benjamin estaba transcribiendo cada sentimiento que pasaba por mi corazón y cada pensamiento que en algún momento pasó por mi cabeza. Me hizo darme cuenta de cosas sobre mí misma que ya sabía y que no quería aceptar, y me hizo replantearme otras tantas. Incluso me impulsó a reconectarme con algunas personas de otra manera. El libro tiene sus cuantos errores, claro que sí y los puedo ver, pero elijo conectarme con él a un nivel más profundo que el simple análisis de cómo está escrito y cómo se presenta a algunos personajes (desde que me hicieron darme cuenta que Dante es manic pixie dream boy no puedo dejar de verlo, pero está bien, realmente no me importa mucho). Soy consciente de que Benjamin nunca verá esta reseña pero no puedo dejar de decirle gracias. Debo admitir que empecé este libro con cero expectativas. Al leer la sinopsis pensé que iba a ser una historia cursi de autodescubrimiento y llena de drama y sufrimiento innecesario. Estoy feliz de poder decir que estaba completamente equivocada. "El esplendor de las raíces" es probablemente uno de los libros más hermosos que tuve el placer de leer este año, y tal vez en mi vida. Es una historia simple, sin grandes dramas y con cosas que van al punto, pero con personajes y relaciones sumamente complejos. Exactamente el tipo de historia que amo. La pluma de la autora es súper ligera y las páginas no se sienten cuando las lees, pero no por eso sus palabras van a tener menos peso. Aparte de que me reí un montón, sobretodo con el sarcasmo de Maya. Luego, cuando iba a eso de la mitad de la historia, me dije "nah, está muy bonita, pero no creo llorar con esto". Otra vez, estaba muy pero muy equivocada. Todavía tengo los ojos hinchados después de los últimos capítulos, pero fue un llanto de felicidad y alivio por cómo todo se resolvió. Tanto Grace como Maya y Joaquín son personajes entrañables y muy diferenciados, pero también con los que es posible identificarse. Joaquín fue mi hermano preferido, pero solo porque tengo debilidad por los varones tiernos que están un poco rotos por dentro y tienden a ocultarlo para proteger a los demás. Se puede ver cómo historia personal y las familias de cada uno los apoyaron (o no) en sus decisiones y por eso son lo que son ahora. Dios, quiero abrazarlos y nunca soltarlos porque se sienten tan reales (cuando descubrí por primera vez este libro pensé que era una especie de autobiografía lol). Cada vez que se referían al otro como "mi hermana/o" me daban ganas de llorar. Algo que noté y me encantó es que estos personajes son realmente adolescentes. Hacen berrinches, son egoístas, caprichosos, perdonan, aman, tienen muchos miedos con respecto a los demás y a sí mismos. El libro da una visión preciosa de la familia, y también de los distintos tipos de familia que hay, y como ninguna es perfecta. En cuanto a cada familia, la que más me gustó fue la de Maya, en el sentido de todo lo que ella tiene que pasar para encontrar su lugar en el mundo y todos los conflictos internos que tiene con respecto a sus hermanos biológicos y su hermana adoptiva. Me hizo darme cuenta de la importancia de la identidad y el pasado propio, y lo sumamente privilegiada que soy al saber cuáles son mis raíces. No sé, SIENTO QUE TODO ESTÁ TAN BIEN HECHO Y TODOS LOS TEMAS DELICADOS QUE SE TRATAN LO HACE DE FRENTE Y CON RESPETO Y VERDAD. Simplemente me encantó de principio a fin. Claramente eso no sucedió, y el inevitable final de Vincent y Theo llegó. Y siempre me shockea. Tanto en "Cartas para Theo" como acá, todo termina de forma abrupta, en medio de una frase. Uno ya sabe qué es lo que sigue, y aún así te hace sentir como si todavía faltara una justificación a todas las tragedias, algún "pero" que arregle un poco las cosas. El amor y la devoción que se tienen Jo y Theo es hermoso e inspirador. Es una lástima que ya no se escriban cosas así. Desde un principio Theo le aclara a Jo que sabe que su matrimonio no va a ser un cuento de hadas y que no espere de él un príncipe azul, pero le promete amarla como nada en el mundo y hacer todo lo posible para que ambos sean felices. Creo que es lo más honesto y precioso a lo que se puede aspirar. Si bien la "historia" se torna un poco densa a veces porque viven discutiendo sobre muebles y departamentos (y no los puedo culpar, no es como si desde ese momento supieran que más personas iban a leer sus pensamientos) te sentís un poco metiche al leer sus pensamientos y sus deseos. Me sentí muy cercana a Jo y sus cartas siempre me sacaron una sonrisa. Es una mujer divertida, extremadamente curiosa por todo lo que la rodea y también llena de inseguridades (sobretodo durante su compromiso, donde todavía no estaba segura si sería suficiente en todo sentido). Cada día que pasa la admiro más. Me rompe el corazón que dos personas tan locamente enamoradas hayan pasado tan poco tiempo juntas. Theo estuvo esperando por años para que Jo le dé el "sí, quiero" y la amaba con tanta profundidad que duele. Luego de la muerte de Theo, Jo tuvo que pasan muchas cosas sola, sumado a criar al pequeño Vincent. La muerte de Theo siempre me dolió más que la de Vincent. Me encantó leer a Theo en relación a otra persona que no sea Vincent, o verlo desde otros ojos que no sean los de él. Theo fue tremendamente fiel a su hermano, y lo amaba más que a sí mismo. Cuando Vincent murió, fue muy muy duro leer lo devastado que se sentía. En cuanto a la edición... Dios, es un libro complicadísimo de conseguir. Solo lo encontré y lo pedí prestado en archive.org (en amazon está como $500 dólares !!!!!!!!). Y GRACIAS AL DE ARRIBA por todas los los pie de página que tiene el libro que te explican a qué carta están respondiendo, cuáles están perdidas y quiénes son las personas que mencionan. Todavía no lo terminé de digerir, y cada tanto me vienen flashbacks de algunas frases del final que me hicieron apartar la netbook, pausar el audiolibro y llorar como estúpida. Este libro fue una primera vez para mí en muchos sentidos: leer no ficción, leer un libro completo en inglés y entender todo, y seguir la lectura con el audiolibro en Spotify (al principio me reía sola porque me sentía en los ejercicios de listening del colegio). No puedo estarle más agradecida a Fa Orozco por recomendar el libro en su canal de Youtube. Lo empecé con curiosidad un poco morbosa y para ayudarme en mi lectura de "Cartas para Theo", pero llegó el punto en el que no tenía suficiente. Quería más y más y más de esta historia por más de que a partir de las últimas 60 páginas sabés que el final es inevitable, y aún así no podés parar. Mientras Deborah describe los lugares, las emociones, uno se puede sentir allí con los hermanos, respirando el mismo aire limpio de campo o el sucio de París, o caminando las largas caminatas que ambos hacían. Si bien nos muestra las situaciones difíciles de forma más bien endulzada, también nos muestra el lado más humano de Theo y Vincent, quienes tenían una adoración el uno por el otro de es de otro mundo. Tuvieron que pasar un montón de cosas, y aún así jamás perdieron la esperanza el uno por el otro y hacia el arte de Vincent. Ellos sabían que algún día el mundo conocería a Vincent van Gogh y amarían lo que él hacía. No estaban equivocados. Nos muestra su amor, sus peleas, sus esperanzas y decepciones, no solo el arte. Pero sobretodo estoy feliz de que le haya dado un lugar a Jo, ya que sin ella y su hijo, nadie sabría quién fue Vincent van Gogh. Tanto Vincent como Theo tuvieron un final trágico y honestamente creo que si Vincent no se hubiera disparado aquella tarde, no habría vivido mucho tiempo más, porque no podría haber habitado un mundo en el que su hermano ya no estuviera para él. El destino de ambos estaba condenado, porque no podrían haber vivido el uno sin el otro. El trabajo de Deborah es meticuloso y lleno de información, pero no por eso es denso. Fue una una experiencia hermosa el poder compartir esta lectura con personas que aprecio tanto, y también fue un poco devastador emocionalmente porque recordaba pocos detalles de la trama (lo dramático que fue la muerte de Luke, cof cof. Hacía muchísimo tiempo que no lloraba tanto con un libro). Releer esta saga fue como volver a casa después de pasar años en el exterior, sobretodo en estos tiempos tan complicados que estamos viviendo. El amor que le tengo solamente es comparable al amor que le tienen los potterhead a Harry Potter. Mi obsesión con Percy Jackson ha sobrevivido a lo largo de los años, pero volver a esto... No tengo palabras. Es como que te arropen con una manta y te digan que todo está bien.

Para mí, este es para leer en las tardes-noches de verano después de un largo día de calor en la que no hiciste demasiado, cuando empieza a refrescar y ves el sol bajar y te sentís feliz y ligera y sin preocupaciones. ¿Es muy específico? Sí, pero es mi sensación favorita en el mundo y es justamente lo que este libro me hace sentir: feliz, ligera y sin preocupaciones. Esta es mi tercera relectura y siento que cada año que pasa lo aprecio un poco más. ¿Es uno de los mejores libros del universo? Qué sé yo, para mí hay pocas historias que me hagan sentir tanto. Admito que tenía miedo de volver a leerlo porque creía que me iba a dar mucha nostalgia de mi adolescencia, ya que no soy la misma chica que era cuando lo leí por primera vez y que se identificaba tanto con el protagonista. De hecho, ahora pensé que me iba a sentir más cercana a Dante. No sé si es bueno o malo, pero sentí que estaba leyéndolo por primera vez y descubrí que (para bien y para mal) Ari y yo seguimos compartiendo la misma neurona idiota. Es más, creo que me sentí que ahora conectábamos más ahora que cuando yo misma tenía quince años. (Este libro básicamente me gritó volvé a terapia pelotuda) Ahora lo único que quiero en la vida es poder abrazar a Benjamin y decirle lo valiente que fue él por escribir esto y lo importante que es para mí. Aparte de toda la introspección personal a la que me llevó, aprendí a apreciar un poco más la escritura de este libro. Es muchísimo más que una historia de amor. Es una historia de autodescubrimiento, de sexualidad, de alegrías, de duelo, de la familia y del amor en muchas formas. El autor te muestra que no hay que escribir un libro florido y lleno de elementos y metáforas para que sea profundo y reflexivo. Con capítulos muy cortitos y llenos de diálogo podemos entender a la perfección a los personajes, sentir lo que ellos sienten y situarnos en donde ellos están. Con esta nueva lectura pude notar cómo los personajes se van enamorando poco a poco, algo que me encantó y que no había podido ver. Aparte de que tiene unas frases hermosas, creo que este es el libro con más post-its que tengo en mi biblioteca. Por siempre uno de mis confort books.
