A beautifully illustrated wordless picture book. I liked this a lot but without words, and with dinosaurs being extinct, this book had a sort of a lonely, sad feeling. It's neat how the past and present are connected though.

The art in this book is neat, and I really like that the illustrations were done on paper made from vegetables, gardening pants and shirt. I didn't like having to read the book vertically because it was annoying to hold, and didn't add anything to the story. The general message is good - don't trust anyone and being lazy is bad... I just don't love how the message is portrayed.
Bear has a lot of land but is lazy. He agrees to let Hare farm on his land in exchange for half of each vegetable (Bear always picks the wrong half - tops for carrots, bottoms for corn, etc.). So Hare is able to sell enough vegetables to buy back his land that he sold to Bear. Hare has tricked Bear, and profited from the trick. But Bear didn't really do anything wrong - he let Hare farm on his land in exchange for half the profits, which seems pretty fair.
I probably would have liked the story better if Bear was really mean or did something to deserve being tricked. Sure, Bear was being lazy, but did he deserve to be tricked for that? Also, don't bears sleep a lot? Isn't that their thing? Is Bear being punished for being himself and sleeping which is part of his nature?

"There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly" is an American folk tale from the 1940s. This was one of my least favorite stories when I was a kid - I still don't get it. But the art in this book! I just love it. The die-cuts are wonderful, and everything is just so fun to look at! I wish the author had stuck with the more traditional version of the story though - the flow isn't quite as good.

This book was so much more interesting than I expected! This is the story of Waterhouse Hawkins who was the first person to create life-size models of dinosaurs. You can still see them today at the Crystal Palace Park in Sydenham, England. He also worked in NYC for two years, creating more dinosaur sculptures for a museum that was to be built in Central Park... except William Tweed, a corrupt New York politician, thought that was a waste of money, so he had some men destroy Hawkins' sculptures and bury them in Central Park - they're still buried there somewhere!
Really cool book, and I'm not really into dinosaurs! I wish the bookcover was brighter though - it doesn't really match the inside illustrations. There are some really neat touches in this book like the actual menu from Hawkins' famous dinner inside one of the dinosaur sculptures!

The woodblock prints are a great complement to the nature poems. This is probably more of a 4 star book, but it just wasn't for me. I'm not too into poetry and this seemed somewhat dry, and there were a lot of bugs in this - no matter how pretty they look, I still didn't want to see them! This would be great for kids that like nature and especially bugs.

Meh. I didn't really like this. Some of the collages were neat, but some looked heavily colored in Photoshop so they looked kind of weird. Might be fun with a group of kids? Also, the book cover is one of the worst I've seen! It reminds me of when I first used Microsoft Paint, and thought, Ooooo I can wrote words on a circle!

This is a beautiful, unique book! However, I think adults would appreciate this a lot more than children. Each page lists a letter, an animal in the shape of the letter, and lists the class, habitat, range, threats and status. Sometimes the letter just really doesn't look anything like the animal, and the image feels really forced. Also, I had some minor frustrations with the typography: the name of the animal should have been larger because it gets really lost, and the box on each page was too tight and close to the words making it a bit hard to read. I wish there'd been an actual photo of the animal, or maybe a map of where it was from (a map would have been really interesting). At the end of the book, is a list of each animal and a more detailed description of each. I don't understand why the descriptions were separated like that.
I like how different this book is though. I love the simplicity of it, and I love that it's trying to bring attention to endangered animals!
I'm giving this 4 stars because I really enjoyed it. As a children's book though, I'd give it less.

Beautiful illustrations. I love seeing the pencil marks, and how detailed the drawings are. I feel like most illustrators use pencil, then go over it with ink and erase the pencil, so seeing the pencil just gives this such a unique look. This is the first Pinkney book I've read, and I can't wait to read all his other books. So beautiful and expressive. A Caldecott Winner for obvious reasons!

Charming, sweet book! A zookeeper gets sick so his animal friends visit him at home to cheer him up. Not sure I loved the art but the process sounded interesting: woodblock printing techniques and pencil. Kind of gave the book an old-timey look which I didn't really like but was unique and probably other people will enjoy.
Sweet, but not an amazing book. I didn't feel like this is a Caldecott winner, however the nominees weren't my favorites either. Maybe 2011 was a slow picture book year. This was good, just not an over-the-top-amazing winner....more
