I was hoping Raistlin is just a selfish, self-centered, egotistical, megalomaniacal young mage, who has some lofty goals and would sell everything and everyone to achieve them. And yes, he is all those things, but I never thought him truly evil, and he decided to prove me wrong! I was so angry with him, at his callus disregard for the lives of anyone, and if you have read the book, you all know what scene I am talking about in particular! ...more

This is another close almost encounter with other intelligence species, which doesn't go too well for our academy pilots and scientists... The series has a lot of issues, but despite that, I am still enjoying it and it always keeps me reading, wanting to know how our heroes will get out of almost impossible situations, as well as figuring out if the charming, cocky and misogynistic MacAlister is going to find a good woman to replace the hole in his heart his departed wife had left him with years ago...
I enjoy the political machinations and the academic power struggles. I love Hutch. I am not as fond of the fact that two hundred years in the future humanity seems to be dealing with exactly the same issues we are dealing with today. I listened to an interview with the author and he said he believes people don't charge. I see it a bit differently. We, as humans do not change, our motivations and the human core of our being have always been the same. However, the environment we create around us, the way we frame how we treat each other and the systems we create change continuously. The first book in the series was written in 1994, this fifth instalment was written in 2006, and already today, 2024, we have a different social framework of how we approach each other both socially and in the workplace. Even our daily vocabulary has changed since the 90's. Yes, we are still fundamentally the same, but change is inevitable.
As I said, the series has its issues, but I am still committed to it and am looking forward to seeing what happens in the next couple of books ...more

A hard book to rate and a difficult subject to read... I am a humongous fan of AT as an author and I have never been disappointed. I love his passion for insectoid life and how he works with their characteristics to affect his creations. What makes this particular book uncomfortable is seeing one of our protagonists spiral into doubt and where that leads him. He is smart, he is not a bad person, but his passions and choices lead him on a very questionable path and although I hope he can find his way back, unfortunately I don't foresee a good ending for him in the future...
War and seeing all its victims is always hard to read. The subject is dark, the current situation is bleak and no end of suffering is in sight... So, bring it on!I am all in this series and can't wait to see where Tchaikovsky leads us!...more

When I started reading the Warhammer Eisenhorn/Ravenor/Bequin series, I was expecting a lot of military hard sci-fi battles, space Marines, and not much of a plot. Instead, I was very pleasantly surprised to discover a series with debt of plotting and mystery upon mystery! The characters are not super flashed out, but the little we learn about them is plenty for us to root for the characters we get to know, even if eventually we find out they might not be on the up and up... There is politics, mysticism, friendships and betrayal. And there are fights to keep things moving, ...more

I can see why so many of the fans of the original series might feel this book doesn't live up to it. I understand their point, but I actually enjoyed it. There were discrepancies, the philosophy was not present, but there was an engaging plot and interesting characters. I liked being back in this Dune world and plan to continue with the prequels ...more
