As with Out in the Open and Out on a Limb, I ended up binge reading this book! I started reading late one night, planning to stop after only a few chapters, and next thing I know it’s 3 in the morning and I’m almost finished!! Work was EXTREMELY painful the next day.
More about the book…
When Mac arrives to Browerton his freshman year, he’s determined to be out and proud. He meets Gideon at a fresher mixer and determines there is a high probability that Gideon is flirting with him. When Mac finally makes a move, Gideon is horrified and the two men spend the next two years avoiding each other. Flash-forward past those two years: Gideon is suddenly in need of a roommate, and Mac shows up knocking on his door looking to rent a room.
I LOVED this book!! No, it isn’t perfect and is entirely too predictable, but it just hit on all the things I love when reading new adult. Especially when it comes to the CRAZY HOT experimentation…and everything else that comes with a good out-for-you story. Both guys have their quirks: Gideon, the compulsive liar and neat-freak, and Mac, the slobby roommate with the massive “non-banana” hidden in his Jenga-ish pile of junk. Gideon with his fear of no longer being the “good son” and Mac with his fear of being left alone and rejected. Somehow, Gideon and Mac are able to overcome their differences and reservations and discover they were meant to be together in the end. But it won’t be easy getting there.
Both characters were believable and easy to connect with. I smiled, I laughed out loud, and I even teared up a few times…sad tears and happy tears. I don’t want to spoil the ending, but I was happy it ended with all the big obstacles resolved.
Oh oh oh, I almost forgot to mention the few cameos of Greg and Ethan from Out in the Open. Again, I also recommend their book, but it isn’t necessary to enjoy Gideon and Mac’s story.
Hmm, who will become the next gay love story at Browerton University??

Poe is a new to me author, and here lately, I've been very hesitant in requesting review copies of authors I am not familiar with, but I was immediately sold on the blurb (yes, I actually read the blurb this time) and all the references to Edgar Allan Poe.
The Mystery of Nevermore tells the story of Sebastian Snow, a 33 year old antiques shop owner stuck in a four year long closeted relationship. (The boyfriend is in the closet, not Sebastian.) One morning, shortly before Christmas, he discovers a heart hidden beneath the floorboards of his store. That's when Detective Calvin Winter enters Sebastian's life. Big and hard...and gray? Well, did I forget to mention Sebastian suffers from achromatopsia...meaning he cannot see color. Which is very unfortunate as he is told Calvin is a fiery headed ginger with freckles all over!! Oh, but Sebastian can see the freckles and he is immediately attracted to the "heartless" detective. Wait, but there is a mystery happening here! So, Sebastian discovers that other crimes are occurring near him with a very Poe-ish nature. And of course he can't help sticking his nose in Detective. Winter's investigation...even if it makes Sebastian a bigger target.
I love everything Edgar Allan Poe!! I love his stories. I love his poetry. I even love the details of his life...and death. I love how the author incorporated his work into the mystery here. There's a murderer out there killing people in a manner very reminiscent of Poe's work. I had a lot of fun attempting to identify which story/poem inspired each crime and I can say I figured out most of them! Unfortunately, I also immediately figured out the killer the first time they showed up on the page, but I could not figure out the "why" they were doing the killing. So, there was still a good mystery to follow, but I feel it could have been stronger.
This book has a A LOT more romance than I was expecting, being that this is a DSP Publications release. Yes, there is mystery, but this was still very much a romance!
Sebastian's current relationship with his boyfriend Neil has been quickly going down hill over the past six months. Even though they've been living together, Neil is a detective and refuses to come out and declare his love for Sebastian in the open. He makes Sebastian feel like his dirty little secret and Sebastian is no longer happy with living in the closet. So when Sebastian meets Calvin...and has sex with him, he's still technically still in a relationship with Neil. This could be an issue for some readers, but the chemistry between Sebastian and Calvin makes it all worth it for me. Plus, Neil had already used up all his chances in my eyes and never put Sebastian before himself. Plus, Calvin was so hot when he was being attentive and concerned for Sebastian. The problem: Calvin is still in the closet himself!!
My only complaint with the romance between Sebastian and Calvin, is that it bordered a bit too close to insta-love for my tastes. I can't say that they work out all their relationship issues in the end; after all, this is the first book in their series!! But the book ends with a solid happy for now.
In the beginning, the story was very "Adrien English-like": frumpy dressing shop owner with a disability turns amateur sleuth when he is investigated by a hot closeted detective...then falls for said hot closeted detective. Except in this case, the hot closeted detective actually loves the nearly TSTL amateur sleuth.
What’s next and how long do I have to wait for more Snow & Winter??!!

I really liked the tension between Jeremy and Chris and both of sex scenes were hot, but I found myself more interested in what was happening between Eric and Trix!! My biggest complaint is the author made out like Mabe and Billy were elderly, when they are both in their early 40's!!
This could be read as a stand alone, but I strongly recommend reading A Prairie Dog's Love Song first since Ben and Joshua show up a lot throughout this book. I do hope there are plans for more stories set in Clyde’s Corner. ...more

I remember Rand from Better Than Safe, and he's has had a complete personality transplant since then. He might even be my most favorite character from any of Lane's books!! I loved how he was true to himself and hated not being able to be the REAL Rand in front of his friends. But I especially loved how he respected Will's wishes.
And then there was Will! The crossdressing was totally hot...and his statement at the end was THE.BEST.EVER!!!!
Complaint!! There was basically only three women in the whole book! I hated how the female with the most page time was a skanky man-eater. And then the mom was a bitch and the one other woman was barely memorable.

I’ve been looking forward to Roman’s story ever since I read How to Howl at the Moon. I really wanted to know more about his relationship with James and what made Roman catch the “spark”. Plus, I was really curious how he would find a “mate”…although I already had a strong suspicion of who that mate might be.
I got everything I wanted…and more!!
Roman was adorable! I loved his naïveté and how he was very doggie like in his head. He made me smile the entire time!
Matt… Hmm…okay Matt isn’t all that memorable but I’m glad he finally stood up for himself.
So many hilarious scenes! I was dying laughing during the “phone sex”.
My favorite line: “Better than sardines!”
Lots of Lance and Tim too. I had forgotten how intense Lance was and I loved every time Roman made him “uncomfortable”. Too funny!
I wasn’t too interested in the whole drug dealer plot, but every thing else was priceless.
Oh, oh, oh! I loved the back-scenes with James and Roman! Totally bittersweet but helped me understand Roman…as a man and a dog.
I love this strange, little town of Mad Creek and hope there is another story there soon!

“I was Graham Cowrie, tutor extraordinaire and now Sherlock Holmes of the north.”
It has been several months since a book has grabbed my attention “I was Graham Cowrie, tutor extraordinaire and now Sherlock Holmes of the north.”
It has been several months since a book has grabbed my attention as quickly as The Tutor…I never even finished the blurb when I knew I needed to read this book as soon as possible.
Throughout all my years of reading, I’ve always had a fondness for haunted house stories. The creepier the better. There was nothing I loved more than sitting in my darkened house with a low lit lamp and a book that could scare the breath out of me anytime I heard a tiny creak break the silence. Even though I’ve upgraded to a self-lit Kindle, The Tutor did not disappoint!
I’m just going to jump right into my thoughts; the blurb is available for you to peruse at your leisure…or just go in blind like I (mostly) did.
The Characters: The story is told completely in first person from Graham’s POV and I immediately connected to him and his voice. I loved his outlandish imagination and how he would think up fully developed scenarios-slash-fantasies and play them out in his mind. But then the doubt and insecurities would set in and he would have to come back to the here and now. As for Richard? Well, he was a tougher nut to crack. I actually knew more about his twin sons, Clive and Whitney, long before Richard started revealing himself. But I totally fell for his tortured soul and misplaced guilt. Then there Tom and the other peculiar members of the house staff. And most importantly, the ominous presences (yes, plural) that had taken up residence in Allinson Hall.
The Romance: This is slow burn with a capital S! Some readers may even consider the romance too slow. I on the other hand, LOVE when the characters fight their attraction for each other until it culminates into a passionate and heated encounter…which is exactly what happens between Graham and Richard. Is it dirty? Yes. Is it kinky? It could have been kinkier. But I definitely felt the connection between them and I actually wished for a bit more “page time” of them together.
The Haunting: This story definitely gets points for eeriness and I admit it had me looking around the room and over my shoulder on more than one occasion. I could sometimes feel that heavy weight of darkness and gloom that would come over Graham when he was exploring around the halls. Unfortunately, the haunting plot falls a bit short on originality and into the realm of predictability. I kept hoping for that one big twist that never came.
In the End: I loved this book and almost everything about it. It fits perfectly to my tastes in what I love to see in a “gothic romance with a gay twist”.
