I didn't feel much suspense to it and the "bad guy" didn't really make much sense. As for the romance portion of the book I wasn't feeling it. No real connection between the to MCs, and the hero comes off as a huge jerk right from the beginning and the heroine couldn't stand up for herself. Just a bit of a dull story with no real life. This is one that I won't even remember I've read in a month. ...more
I had lots of different feelings while reading this book and when I was done I wasn't sure how I felt about it.
I've only read the Turning series by JI had lots of different feelings while reading this book and when I was done I wasn't sure how I felt about it.
I've only read the Turning series by J.A. Huss so I was expecting this book to be more like that series and not a cliffhanger. I didn't love it as much as Taking Turns but it was so different I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The first chapter was amazing. I LOVED that the heroine was a badass chick/contract killer.
Through most of the book I felt bad/sad for Danny. I could feel his genuine love for Christine and his hurt over how things ended. I wish we'd seen more in his flashbacks about how he felt about Alec or Alec and Christine together and not just how they both wanted him. By the time there was any sex it felt/I felt like Danny was manipulated into it a bit. It kind of gave me an uneasy feel that he was coerced into it which I didn't like. (view spoiler)[Something like we saw in the epilogue. (hide spoiler)]
I could see the (view spoiler)[ Lars thing coming from miles away, from the very first time he asks Alec a question. (hide spoiler)] But I am looking forward to more of his backstory with Christine in the next book.
There was also a few points where I was confused on what day/point in the story it was. The way a few things were described (i.e. morning, hours of driving, etc.) I thought they were at the glass house for 2-3 days not less than 24 hrs. That kind of things tends to pull me out of the story and think other things too much. I'm hoping the next book is more smooth.
There wasn't as much heat as I was expecting compared to Taking Turns the story seemed more focused on the suspense. I'm not sure I'd call this an erotic novel like I would other Huss books. I would have liked more....more

My3.5 stars After realizing I’m reading JG’s books in the Navesink Bank universe (and universe adjacent) out of order I decided to read them in order. My very first NB Adjacent book was For A Good Time Call... I just didn’t know it at the time. Now I working backwards from the Savages series trying to fill in the blanks with some Henchmen and and now the often mentioned but never seen OG Xander Rhodes.
I could tell this was one of her earlier books. It was still great and the characters exciting but not as flushed out as her newer books. A few continuity things where I couldn’t tell how a character got from one point to the next and some unanswered questions which let to plot holes.

Some thoughts, I really enjoyed This is when I really really wish Goodreads had half star options. This would be a 3.5, and I just can't round it up.
Some thoughts, I really enjoyed the 2 short prequels to this novel/series so I was expecting so much more from this. So much more sexual tension and attraction. It just wasn't there.
I've been reading JR Ward for a few years now (about 5 I think) but all paranormal up to this point, and she has a very certain style and many phrases and words unique to her. Which is cool. But some of them just didn't fit in this book the way to do in a book about hundreds of years old vampires. I kept expecting V or Rhage to just walk onto the page and it pulled me out of the story a bit.
Along these same lines her characters in this books are all in their late twenties to mid to late thirties (i.e. millennials, I fall into this category too) and I can't tell if a few of her comments in the book are digs at millennials or trying to seem cool. As well as odd things that I would hear my grandma talk about growing up and just didn't seem right in this book with these characters. Like she had someone think or say something about "Party Lines" as in old phone lines where multiple people were on the same line at one time before everyone (or even every home had their own line/number). There were a few other pop culture references like this that just didn't fit within the context of the story.
The books also just seems to not quite get going. I felt it needed another 100 pages or a second full book to bring in more of the suspense and for our two main character to fully develop their relationship as well as grow themselves.
I know this is suppose to be the first book in a new series but I feel like the next book still needs to be about these two and the rest of this story. I'm hoping we'll get that resolved in whatever she does give us next. I hope it's soon too. This was released in 2018 and she didn't put one out in 2019 and as of yet there is nothing pending or noted for the second book in this series. ...more

The book started out pretty good and I liked the idea but it never seemed to go anywhere. Even the mystery/thriller aspect wasn’t nearly as good as other Harlequin Intrigues I’ve read. I felt like both characters were wanting their old relationship from high school back and neither was too open about communicating about how they felt now in the present day. I never felt the chemistry I was expecting from these reunited lovers.
There was also a lot of things hinted at in both their past as well as the murder mystery aspect that never seemed resolved. We don’t actually know why Gwen broke up with Wyatt other than he was going away to college but it was constantly hinted at that there was some big reason or it was a big production that I expected to hear/see/read about. At least something more than “I dumped him, will he want me back?”.
Too much leads or hints at plots points that never went anywhere and I just found it annoying.

But I’m really happy with this book. I’m glad I decided to start this series, especially since this one comes prior to the other 2 I’ve read and introduces more of the characters that we hear about in those book.
I recommend this book as a great place to start reading Jessica Gadziala. I enjoyed the plot and the characters from the get go. There were some good twists I wouldn’t have seen coming if I hadn’t read the synopsis for other books (hint: don’t read synopsis for other books in this series until you’re yo then). I know some thought there wasn’t enough connection between the two characters but I felt it. It wasn’t like reading a book where you’re told, we’re show how they feel.

The first half was way too long and should have been told in the first 45-50 pages since it was part of the story we already knew from the previous books about Bella being a prisoner of the English and living in a cage/tower. That really took away from the rest of the book for me. They did have an intense connection but of course we had to fall back into the hero of not being able to admit to his feelings which I didn't believe because for the past 3-4 years he's been trying to rescue Bella. He hadn't been trying to rescue the other women/girls who'd been taken prisoner by the English only Bella so you can tell that it was based more on the connection they'd had prior to her capture.
There was even one scene where Bella tries to use sex to convince him of something and he is constantly telling her "no" and "stop" but she doesn't and he refused to physically stop her/push her away. For me it was too rapy, like a scene from Disclosure (with Demi Moore and Michael Douglas). Of course in this book they're both in love with each other and regret it the instant it's over blah blah blah.
It ends well enough and has a great epilogue but there just wasn't enough of the "here and now" part of the story for me. ...more

Hmm...started out good, was excited for it after the first book in the series. I enjoyed the heroine being curvy and described as “Spanish” though I’m not sure if that was suppose to mean Latina or actually from Spain. Though I enjoyed the heroine finding a place to call home and new friends I felt the author’s introduced way too many characters in this book that are from her other series is what seems like a backdoor pitch to get more readers to those series instead of letting this book/series stand on its own. Same issues but to a much larger extent in For A Good Time Call. ...more

It grabbed me from the first paragraph (it didn't hurt that I just finished running a half marathon and the heroine is talking about running charity 5ks lol) and didn't let go.
The story was good, I loved getting Paine's background finally and it was a good one. Our heroine also had a family dynamic this time around which we didn't really have in the previous two books unless you count the absences of.
Steamy sex in this one was off the charts too. I think more so than the first two. I don't know if it was just because of the kind of sex but these two really connect and had hot sex jumping off the page making the reader with they could trade places with one of the characters. ;)
One of the things I really appreciated was that Jessica Gadziala did NOT over indulge like she often does with characters from other series/books.
My only issue, and it's not really the book's fault or author's fault was that I had a hard time picturing what Paine looked like. With the big guild and tattoos I wanted to picture The Rock but he's too silly/goofy and Paine is soooo not SNL silly/goofy. So I never had a good image in my head of our hero but that only really took away from the story when I focused on it too much.

I think JM portrayed PTSD well for this kind of a novel and showed that the hero had to put with into getting better, that he wasn’t magically “cured” by love.

Being from Oregon and having lived in Scotland for many years I could connect with that part of Sam that wanted the green seaside life. Something different than the harsh desert she’d always known.
There were some great secondary characters too that added to the fun of the book. Can’t wait for The Rook’s book and Callum and Alison’s books....more
