I haven't read any Ransom Riggs book since April or May, so I had quite high hopes for this one. Were my expectations met? ACTUAL RATING: 2.75/5 stars
I haven't read any Ransom Riggs book since April or May, so I had quite high hopes for this one. Were my expectations met? Not really. Is this still a good short story anthology? Undoubtedly.
While most of these stories bored me to death, there were a few which I adored. The First Ymbryne, The Girl Who Could Tame Nightmares and The Tale of Cuthbert were enjoyable and interesting, if I say so myself.
I'm still hoping for another sequel to the main story?? But I guess I'm asking for too much. It's okay....more

I didn't actually like Sophos in the first volume, but as of right now he is one of my favourite characters, and this doesn't usually happen to me when I'm reading series.
My only wish is to find out what's the release date for the fifth book....more
Oh god oh god oh god oh god. Why do I have to ship Gen and Costis so hard? Why? It's not even feasible.
This book didn't have an interesting plot, in Oh god oh god oh god oh god. Why do I have to ship Gen and Costis so hard? Why? It's not even feasible.
This book didn't have an interesting plot, in my opinion. Does it matter? Nah. Did I still enjoy the hell out of it? Yup. Am I dying to read the last volume? Absolutely.
"Let me arrest him, and I will drag the proof out of him." The queen shook her head. "Why not?" Teleus asked helplessly. "Because the king will not quit, Teleus," said Ornon as he joined them. "You must have noticed," he said. "He whines, he complains, he ducks out of the most obvious responsibility. He is vain, petty, and maddening, but he doesn't ever quit." Ornon shrugged. "Ever."...more

"Surely if it's impossible to steal them with two hands, it's no more impossible to steal them with one. Steal peace, Eugenides. Steal me some time."
Oh Lord. Thank you, Megan Whalen Turner, for writing this epic sequel. I almost didn't read it, because The Thief was a bit of a disappointment. (it's still a good book! I guess it just wasn't for me) However, The Queen of Attolia has everything the previous novel lacked. Character development, a (way) more interesting plot, and, in my honest opinion, a better writing style.
I hope the next two books will be just as good as this one. And ohmygod, I ship Eugenides and Attolia so, so hard.
"Did your grandfather know?" "He knew I was fascinated by her. She's like a prisoner inside stone walls, and every day the walls get a little thicker, the doorway narrower." ...... "How can she know?" asked Eddis. "She is not in the habit of trusting people. Why should she suddenly believe anything you say? You might unlock the door for her; you can't make her walk through."...more

I liked this book. I enjoyed it. I read it in one sitting. I got caught in the story.
But sometimes this just isn't quite enough. The characters were okay (well, a bit more than okay), the plot was interesting, but I just don't feel like giving this more than 3.5 stars. It may deserve them, but not in my opinion. I'll still read the next volume because I FUCKING LOVE HOW "QUEEN OF ATTOLIA" SOUNDS....more

"May I give you some advice? If you are truly his friend, you will help him leave this soft heart behind. He's going to Troy to kill men, not rescue them." His dark eyes held me like swift-running current. "He is a weapon, a killer. Do not forget it. You can use a spear as a walking stick, but that will not change its nature." The words drove breath from me, left me stuttering. "He is not-" "But he is. The best the gods have ever made. And it is time he knew it, and you did too. If you hear nothing else I say, hear that. I do not say it in malice." I was no match for him and his words that lodged like quills and would not be shaken loose. "You are wrong," I said. He did not answer me, only watched me turn and flee from him in silence."
Damn. Damn damn damn damn damn. *sniff* For me, this started like some history-related nonfiction, but then slowly began to turn into LOTS OF GREATNESS AND PAIN yay. Yes, I am still crying. Yes, this tore my soul apart. No, I will never get over it. I can't put into words how this book made me feel, nor can I explain Achilles and Patroclus' relationship. It's just way too much to say.
Read this book.
5/5 stars.
"IN THE DARKNESS, two shadows, reaching through the hopeless, heavy dusk. Their hands meet, and light spills in a flood like a hundred golden urns pouring out of the sun."

I had big hopes for this book, thinking that it would be an amazing steampunk novel with a badass protagonist. It seems now that I was wrong. The writing style requires some editing and the characters aren't well built. Sophronia is annoying and her name is difficult to remember (First World Problems). All these made me give up on this series, and I'm probably not going to continue reading it.

"People respond to kindness, Lada. They trust a smile more than a promise that you will leave them choking on their own blood." Lada snorted. "Yes, but my promise is more sincere than your smiles."
4.5 stars I was expecting a badass main character, some political intrigue, lots of backstabbing, and a bit of romance (maybe even a little love triangle, why not). This book delivers.
"What can I do?" she whispered. Radu's voice was strained with exhaustion. "Stay out of my way." Lada stumbled to the door, ignoring Radu's hastily called-out apology. She crossed the thankfully empty hallways to her own room, locked the door behind herself, and curled up on her bed.
She wanted to dream of Wallachia. She failed at even that.

She remembered all the afternoons they'd spent together, braiding each other's hair, Mariam listening patiently to her random thoughts and ordinary stories with an air of gratitude, with the expression of a person to whom a unique and coveted privilege had been extended."
Never have I cried so much whilst reading a book. Never. This is the realest story I have ever read. The realest characters. The realest plot. It did not feel like fiction, but rather as a biography. I am astonished. Truly, astonished. ∞/5
