I’ve enjoyed previous reads by Margaret Atwood, so I was excited when I stumbled upon this one! The story is about the relationship between mothers and daughters, set in the 1950s and told by a teenage narrator. The use of the gnome in early childhood was interesting, as well as the girl who collected penises....more

Hmm… not sure what my feelings are exactly. I mean I didn’t exactly hate it, but I also am so far away from loving it. The premise itself is super intriguing - I mean celebrity vampires with volunteer donors?! But unfortunately the execution fell flat. The plot was very predictable; like to the point I guessed everything before hitting 30%. I also skimmed the majority of this. The dialogue became redundant and I lost interest. The ending was set up for this to continue as a series… but I’m not sure if I will follow. ...more

This was an interesting and quick horror novella about the end of the world. Or maybe it’s not? Hmm… wasn’t too sure what to make of this, so it was probably best I went in blind. I didn’t really connect with the characters and I felt like they were unreliable… but that was the point, right? We are talking about a book that showcases how easy it is for a group of people to be swayed to believe a false narrative over the truth. ...more

However, I fePrior to reading this I did not have much knowledge regarding Agatha Christie’s disappearance, and was intrigued by the premise of this. However, I felt the plot was lacking a bit. The beginning is slow and I wasn’t a fan of Nan, which is the perspective of the book. Parts 2 & 3 do read faster. They also provide more insight into Nan and why she did the things she did. I did end up feeling sympathy for Nan, as she did have some very traumatic experiences in her young life; but even as the book wrapped up and everything was laid out I still wasn’t a fan. Overall the book was interesting and the writing was done well. ...more

This was a quick and easy read, but I’m not sure where I stand with it. It wasn’t good, but it wasn’t terrible either. It is a typical YA mystery so the plot is based around a school/high school students. I did find the MC Savannah annoying. I was frustrated with her decision skills or I guess the lack of. I was also underwhelmed with the ending. ...more

I was not prepared. This is my first experience with Tessier and I was not disappointed. There is so much going on in this one, so there were some parts that seemed a bit underdeveloped or too far fetched but this did not affect the book much for me. The smut in this… like WOW! So many kinks are explored and I want to say smut graces the pages at least once per chapter. Which may be a bit extreme for some… but I mean, oh well? I really enjoyed this! It was both fascinating and heartbreaking. The story is told through Amara’s POV, and depicts her life working in a brothel in Pompeii as well as her determination to get her freedom back. The author does not stray away from the harsh reality of the life lead by these women. All the characters in this book were well written and had depth. I did notice there was a bit of modern language throughout, but this did not take away from the historical feel of the story. ...more

I was super excited to jump into this one after receiving the ARC, but unfortunately this book was not for me. The synopsis had me intrigued, I just ended up finding the story did not live up to my expectations. The world-building was pretty extensive which made the beginning kind of drag. I didn’t really connect with any of the characters; some of them read more like teenagers than young adults and were lacking personality. Maybe this is due to all the POV jumping - this usually doesn’t bother me. And if I’m being honest the only POV I even remotely enjoyed was Taesia’s. There were also parts of the storyline that didn’t make sense to me - I mean why did it take 500yrs for the world to start perishing and why are only these 4 people trying to do anything about it?? Ugh!...more

She is reading at a 6th grade level so finding books that she is interested in while also being in her reading level has been difficult, so this one was recommended. Reading this with her and introducing her to some mythology was a lot of fun! I do think I enjoyed the book a bit more than her due to her limited knowledge of mythology. There were also things she did quite understand, which is to be expected, that I had to explain. Overall, the book was enjoyable for both.

I’ve been waiting to post the review, because honestly I’m not sure what to make of this. I can’t really say if it was good or not. The majority of the book just gave off an uncomfortable feeling. Here we have a narrative non-fiction based in the 550s about two women who held power and ruled, but were erased and rewritten. So I was on board!
