REVIEW IN ENGLISH
This book is a sequel to a book that I didn't know existed, since what I watched was the film adaptation made by Netflix that I really liked and I'm not surprised that they will soon film the sequel as well.
The first installment is called The Criminal Readers' Club, which I saw in streaming movie format for Netflix and which I loved, since it is a film from Spain, which pays an excellent tribute to the genre of Horror Slasher, especially iconic films like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer.
In this sequel, Angela Kuntz (obvious tribute to the genius Dean Koontz) and her boyfriend Nando return, where Angela is now a famous author thanks to the fact that she wrote a novel narrating the events that occurred in the first installment. And the plot takes place in a workshop located on an island where a group of young writing students will receive tutoring from Angela, but will also receive a visit from the Killer Clown who is once again hungry for blood!

I Know What You Did Last Summer.

REVIEW IN ENGLISH
Since I bought this book on Spanish, I will do the review on bilingual. This biography is part of a line on Spanish of famous women in history, published by a publisher house from Spain.
The book cover all life of Jane Austen and while she died young and she is one of the most famous female authors of all time, it isn’t easy to make a biography of her, since oddly enough, many of her documents and letter were destroyed by some members of her own family, I don’t know if by carelessness, ignorance or jealousy, but the fact is that happened. Luckily, there were still some members of her family that they kept some of her documents and letters and even they published their own personal recollections of Jane Austen’s life.
Jane Austen only published six novels (also a short story) and even two of those novels were published after she passed away, but those six novels are truly pillars of the universal romance genre and inspirations for generations and generations of writers since then.
One of the key elements of Jane Austen’s work was her honesty showing how was the life of women in late 18th century and early 19th century on England, keeping a true testimony of their struggles of surviving a male dominated society where they even weren’t able to inherit properties or money without having to marry a man, therefore marriage was a survival necessity in that society and Jane Austen was able to portrait different scenarios, but where beyond convenience marriages, she always prioritize true love marriages.
Ironically, she never marry, but it wasn’t by choice per se, but destiny just hadn’t that kind of path for her, but instead becoming one of the most influential and relevant romance writers of all time.

HITCHCOCK IN OTHER LANGUAGES
This is a review about a Spanish edition of this book published by Blume which it’s a translation from the original French edition. Even when I started to read it, there wasn’t a Spanish edition created on Goodreads so I clicked on the French edition, but now that I made the review I checked again and I found already created the Spanish edition, I almost chose the Kindle edition since that one has a cover photo for the book, hehe, but since I have the hardcover edition, well I clicked on this one. I am not sure if there is an English edition of this book.
While I love Hitchcock movies and I am a huge fan, I didn’t buy this book right away basically since it was more expensive than my usual budget for a book, of course this is a novel but a thick reference book in hardcover so it has the appropiate price, just I had to think over to make the investment. The first time the book was sold out and I thought that I wouldn’t be able to get it, but luckily it was available again, and then I didn’t hesitate anymore and I buy it, and definitely I am thrilled about having this incredible book.
DREAM COMPANION FOR ANY HITCHCOCK FAN
This reference book is a comprehensive guide of all 57 films directed by Alfred Hitchcock, including not only his cinema theatrical ones but also some TV movies that he directed too. Moreover, beyond his complete filmography, the guide includes 20 of his best TV episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents directed by himself.
The book comments about Hitchcock life before directing and later it’s exposed by each decade, his entire filmography, along with specialized sections focused in diverse topics.
Each movie has several pages dedicated, obviously some films such as Psycho have even more pages, but I can assure you that even his most obscure works possess various pages covering them in a respectful way. Each movie is presented with a resume about what it’s about, its history of how was made, the information about issues on production, casting, where you can find a Hitchcock cameo, comparisons with previous or following works, etc… and even an impartial indication of how the film was received by critics and general audience, everything illustrated with gorgeous full color movie posters and black-and-white photographs of movie stills but also behind-the-scenes moments.
Obviously the TV episodes have less space coverage but you can get quite enough information about them too.
The specialized sections are focused in key topics such as the use of the MacGuffin, his fetiche for blondes, expositions of usual actors like James Stewart, Ingrid Berman, Grace Kelly, but also people of production like Edith Head (role model for Edna Mode from The Incredibles).
This is a massive reference book of almost 650 pages, therefore you can be sure that you can’t find a better sourcebook about Alfred Hitchcock’s career than this one.

REVIEW IN ENGLISH
I was fortunate to be able to read this book because one of my best friends gave it to me for Christmas this year, and my friend also knows the author, asking him to sign it with a dedication. And if that were not enough, it is a revised edition of the book, presented in an elegant hardcover and prestige paper.
The first thing that I liked about the plot is that it is not the typical story of Costa Rican novels located in a rustic town talking about the tribulations of a low-income family. Don't get me wrong, that is certainly worth telling, but the Costa Rican narrative must be more than that, beyond the traditions or the picaresque comedy, and here you can find an exciting fantasy story where you can explore what books mean for people and how they impact the development of society.
Definitely something quite different and refreshing from the usual option in modern Costa Rican literature.
A boy named Gabriel, and his young friend Steven, take a trip to the house of Alfredo Howell, Gabriel's grandfather, where the children initially believe it will be a boring weekend, but nothing can be further from that, since the mystery of a lost manuscript will generate an adventure of epic proportions where the very existence of many of the greatest literary works of humanity will be in danger.
You will never think again about what a book means in the same way!

RELIGIOUS(LY) READING
The first thing that comes to mind is a quote from the novel Virgin by Mary Elizabeth Murphy (aka F. Paul Wilson): God created Faith to unite us, but Man created Religion to separate us.
Because even within several of the most popular religions that worship the same God, there are several subgroups that generate separations within the same religion.
I was looking for this book for a while and I am very happy to have finally found it, since the book is as good (if not better) as I imagined it. And at an affordable price, thanks to the fact that it is published by DK, which is usually a suitable combination of hardcover, prestige paper in full color, but at a reasonable price.
The Book of Religions, as the title indicates, is a book where you can find the origin and the most punctual elements, such as sacred texts, founders and relevant preachers, central ideas, evolution and ramification, key chronology, highlighting geography, average census of adepts, significant divisions, etc... of the majority of the most popular religions in history, such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, but also primitive beliefs, as well as modern religions.
By having all those beliefs and religions in the same book, it is very practical to see certain similarities between them, and to note relevant coincidences such as the 6th Century B.C., it was a key moment in history where most religions consolidated to start creating their own impacts around the world.
This is an essential book for all those interested in knowing about the other religions that exist and/or existed, but also to learn a little more about their own religion, whatever it may be. Definitely it is a lot of overwhelming information to be able to fully understand it in the first read, so I have no doubt that I will be returning to this book many times to read it again.
And do not forget that in the end, the most important thing is to have faith in God (no matter what you call the Higher Power in which you believe) and seek to live in peace with your peers.
LECTURA RELIGIOSA(MENTE)

I don't know about other Latin American countries, but here, in Costa Rica, Paco y Lola is the basic book with which entire generations, for many, many decades, learned how to read in Public Primary School, when I was a kid.
Since nowadays there are more and more private schools in my country, I am not certain if this book is so widespread used in the current educational programs as it was in my days at school (in 1979 I was in First Grade), but since I still watch the book in bookstores, in the Education Sections, I guess that at least in public schools is still in use, but I wouldn't be surprised if private schools are using a "more sophisticated" option,...
...but to me, this book is quite important, since it was the book with which I learned to read and it opened to me an unlimited universe of knowledge and stories.
Thank you, Paco y Lola and thanks too to Emma Gamboa (the author), since I'll never be able to be grateful enough for giving me the priceless gift of reading.

REVIEW IN ENGLISH
Mafalda is undoubtedly the best comic strip in Latin America that it has been published in newspapers, where no other comic strip conceived in this geographical area is near of it, and taking into account that Mafalda stopped of being published in 1973, and even so, 44 years later (2017), nothing has been created in Latin America to make even a small competition.
And while there are obviously a lot of iconic comic strips around the world, such as Peanuts, Garfield, Beetle Bailey, Häggar the Horrible, Dennis the Menace, Blondie, Dilbert, etc...
...in the field of political criticism mixed with smart humor, Mafalda is the best in its style and the most incredible thing (although it puts a sad message about our supposed progress as a global society) is that although has stopped publishing 44 years ago, the humor that exposes continues to impact the same, today, since the socio-political problems it addresses, continue to exist in our current world society.
The comic strip of Mafalda was published from 1964 to 1973, born in Argentina by the brilliant artist Quino, where initially it was simply the caricature of a family for an advertising campaign that never saw the light of day, but...
...that gave life to one of the best examples of socio-political criticism that has been ever made.
Mafalda, the main character who gives name to the comic strip, is a 6-year-old girl, but is very aware of the socio-political environment that affects not only her country, Argentina, but the whole world, and where she he never hesitates to express her frustration about it, with her parents, her friends and some unwary passer-by.
However, Quino, her creator, never forgot that she was still a 6-year-old girl, so we never know what Mafalda is going to bring us, in every comic strip, since just as she worries about wars, world hunger, racial problems and corrupt politicians; equally her attention may be focused on playing cowboys, listening to Beatles music or escaping for not eating the soup.
Thank you, Mafalda, for making us laugh and think at the same time!
Y aunque obviamente, a nivel mundial hay muchas tiras cómicas icónicas como Peanuts, Garfield, Beetle Bailey, Hägar the Horrible, Dennis the Menace, Blondie, Dilbert, etc...

REVIEW IN ENGLISH
I was lucky to find this book and I enjoyed a lot its reading, indeed it is a very good book.
I found its premise irresistible…
…a young girl in a town, developed skills to “tell movies”, since the family wasn’t able to buy tickets to all of them, she is eventually chosen to “the movie-teller” of the family. She will go to watch the movie at the town theatre and later gets back to home to tell them the movie to them, developing a versatile technique performing each character, using costumes and making voices. Her fame will reach the whole town, and more and more people will prefer to watch the young girl’s “movie telling” than going to the actual movie at the theatre.
This fictional adorable story happened in the country of Chile, in a non-disclosured town made around a saltpeter mines’ settlement where the movie theatre was the only entertainment option (well, besides booze), in an era before the coming of TV (at least in that remote Chilean pampa), before of the rising to power of Augusto Pinochet, and where the reader is able to perceive the dramatic change in the lives of the families in the whole town when those elements eventually reached the faraway location.
And since the author lived part of his childhood just in a town like the one in the story, you can be sure that he is narrating a tale with a solid knowledge about the presented ambiance, and a deeper detail, developing a whole spectrum of colorful characters, with unpredictable twists.
There are a couple of disgusting events in the middle of the story, that I found them quite shocking since I was laughing and laughing due the tender way of recounting the tale, and without much warning, you are then, in the middle of awful moments that you can barely digest…
…so it was a rollercoaster of feelings, but at the end, I think that the good times and laughing overwhelm the bad times and pain, since you have to admire the strong attitude toward life of this young girl and her singular coming-to-age.

The title of this book may be tricky to understand what it’s about but it isn’t so difficult to explain…
…it’s basically a book telling anecdotes about the history behind the creation of certain books or their authors.
See? Easy! Now, go to read it!
I think that any book lover would well… love… to read this book since it will give you a deeper understanding about the quite unusual and sometimes even totally unexpected stories leading to the writing of famous books or the quite singular and sometimes radical lives of famous authors, along with related topics.
You’ll find twenty-three anecdotes, written down in an irresistible narrative style, where you’ll totally enjoy to learn those stories, where I’d been familiar with five of them but always giving some aditional background about them.
So, definitely this book was a rich reading experience!
Why do we have alphabetical order? Which city gave birth to most writers? Did all the famous authors actually written their novels? Who was the best ever live reader of his own works? Which American President impacted in different ways to two famous authors? Which writers were hunted by the Gestapo and the KGB? How an 8-years old girl was crucial to one of the most famous book series? How often prison or war were known environments to authors? Which odd motivations were behind the creation of famous books?
And a LOT more!!!

REVIEW IN ENGLISH
I bought this book last weekend (September 19th, 2015) at the 2015 Book Fair realized in my country, Costa Rica.
This novel is written by Grettel Ortíz Jiménez, a Costa Rican author, which is also a Spanish Language Teacher in High School, and so far I understand it’s her first written published work.
I was walking around the Book Fair, with many stands and options, the author was present at her stand and she explained the premise of the novel, so I bought it and even she signed it with a dedicatory.
The premise of the book was appealing to me for different reasons.
The novel is about several kind of experiences of students and teachers during the last two years in a high school, based on true stories but changing names and adapting them to work better in the sense of a novel.
My parents were teachers (now they are retired), my mom of primary school and my dad of secondary school, so the topic of education is always a recurring one in my family.
I was a high school student myself so I found amusing to “re-live” in a sort of way my own experiences at those years through the reading of this novel. And always I am interested to read more non-traditional Costa Rican novels (different to the ones that most of my countrymen (me included) had to read as part of the school programs).
It was a quick reading with 221 pages, I believe that I covered it in like four hours, separated in two reading sessions.
I loved it!
The novel is well written, with interesting characters, engaging narrative, realistic dialogues, and a honest approach to present an impartial ambiance of the Costa Rican High School system, the good, the bad and the ugly, you choose which is which.
It’s not easy to be student in High School, but so it’s the same as uneasy to the teachers. Both sides of the learning equation have a lot to gain but also a lot to lose, and definitely none will be the same after those years.
Times to dream, times to philosophize, times to question,...
You think that you know all about your schoolmates but one thing can change your whole image about someone of them...
High School. Priceless years.
And you can live them again thanks to this great novel.
¡Me encantó!

REVIEW IN ENGLISH
The first two things that I celebrate about this novel are: One, that the story isn’t set in Costa Rica. Two, the story isn’t about anything related with farmers in rural areas or drug cartels or prostitutes or poor people in slums.
First, the fact that an author is from certain country isn’t an axiom to force the hand of the writer to have to use his/her own country as the scenario of the book. Some people tend to say that if a writer is Costa Rican and he/she doesn’t use our own country as the place of the narrative, then they are non patriotic. Ah? Why is that? Sure, I love to know that Costa Rica appears in the novel Jurassic Park, but that doesn’t mean that I want that my country has to be the scenario of any story that I’d read. Please!
Second, I think that Latin American literature (and even more in films) is saturated of the use of drug cartels, prostitutes and poor people in slums. Do we have that in Latin America? Sure! But even advanced countries have that too and not because of that, they use that in ALL their books or movies. It’s like: “Oh! We have so many bad things in our third-world countries! Look how miserable we are!”.
Well, I live in a third-world country and sure we have here drugs, prostitutes and slums, but believe me, my life isn’t miserable and I have never contact with those elements in my life. Third-world countries are so much more than only our bad things.
And for some reason, in local Costa Rican literature, it’s like a rule that we have to show the life of our farmers in rural areas, but to add “color” to the formula, they should be illiterate, poor (but not just your regular level of poverty, oh no! They should be incredible poor!), and of course they should be drunks too. Well, it was like that many years ago, and I am sure that some of them still may be like that, but hardly is an accurate portrait of our current people living in rural areas but more like a stereotype that people tend to think about.
Commenting all that, happily I can tell that this novel Mago Terrenal (that it could be translated as “Earthly Wizard”) is about a wizard from an age where magic was everywhere, but he ended stuck in our own age where magic isn’t anywhere. Eletorn, the wizard, is trapped in some modern city (without establishing any name of it or even the country), where he is helped by two young adults, Jen and Kevin, to look first for his lost book of spells and later to find a way to return in time to Onira, the magic land of the wizard.
So, having to know that there is a novel by a Costa Rican independent author about a topic of fantasy fiction set in non-recognizable scenarios is truly great. But again, you can trust that my rating was totally honest not caring that the writer happened to be from my country.
I can tell for sure, but I can guess that some inspirations of Jorge Carvajal, the author, could be The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, but also A Wizard of Earthsea and its sequels. Even, some stories came to mind like the novel Time Traveler’s Wife and the French film Les Visiteurs. Basically since some of the elements and characters in the story reminded me those sources. Again, I don’t know if he got inspiration from all that or not. Only I can say that it wouldn’t be odd if any of you’d read the book, you could came to similar conclusions. But clearly establishing that I only noticed inspirations, not plagiarism, I don’t want that people would get confused in that.
The narrative is told in a smart way with some humor without making it a comedy. It’s indeed priceless to read how Eletorn, the wizard describes situations of modern life, like using a computer, being in a hospital, etc...
Eletorn isn’t a wizard per se, but a very advanced apprentice of a wizard named Iandros, that in the middle of his “graduation test”, he got trapped in an era where the magic doesn’t exist, therefore he is facing a tragic fate of living in a world where all the studies and knowledge that he invested almost all his life to accomplish, now they are totally useless.
Jen, while she is a modern girl of our own era, hardly you can catalogue her as a common girl, since she has “a fire inside” with the same “frenzy of the Orcs from the Deserts of Chaos” and also she happens to “dream” unlike any other in this modern era.
Kevin is a gamer who met Eletorn in an adventure game in Internet, but soon he is eager to help the wizard in his quests.
There are several other characters but I prefer not commenting about them to avoid some spoiler in the narrative.
So, why then a 4-star rating (that still is a really good rate) instead of a full 5-star rating? Well, I think that while the first part of the story is quite engaging while the wizard is trapped in a world without magic and his interactions with people of this strange world to him, later in the narrative, the story expanded a little bit bigger to my taste, getting away from the original premise, making it more complicated that it needed to be. BUT still is a REALLY GOOD STORY that I am totally glad of having read.
