The premise was very compelling - two friends ride bikes across the country after graduation. They have a falling out and separate and the protagonist has no idea his friend never returned home after their trip until an FBI agent shows up at his door! However, we both got bored by the end. It reminded me of when I read A Separate Peace in high school: a very intense friendship between two teen boys that gets complicated, with a few asides about “hot” teen girls to assure the readers there is nothing gay happening here. There were lots of editing issues (typos and other errors) too. It did inspire me to go for a bike ride though!...more

I was excited to read about a romance between two adults academics who are women and POC but this was pretty boring. I was more interested in the character’s transcription of 17th century letters than the relationship between the two women. Also, I drink, but the amount of alcohol these women consume is downright concerning to the point where it seemed odd it wasn’t addressed (bottles of champagne/wine every night, going out for drinks constantly, drinking half a bottle or rum in one sitting). Final gripe: there is a cat on the cover but no cat within the text!...more

My 12-year old son and I read it together, and we both loved it! It’s a perfect read for middle school aged kids who are concerned about being different or not fitting in. And we loved the author’s note at the end where he discusses his uncle Phuc and the difficulties Vietnamese (and other) immigrants encounter when it comes to choosing to stick with their names or opting for a more “American” name. We also loved learning about the different Vietnamese dishes! ...more
