The sequel to Binny for Short (Simon & Schuster, 2013) opens with the Cornwallis family moving into a new house. To distract herself from problems at school, Binny investigates the disappearance of her brother’s chicken. Interwoven with Binny’s story in the present, is the tale of three children from the past who lived in the same house. McKay’s clipped language, daily activity, and traditions keep this story firmly set in England. A few British terms were mixed interchangeably with the American equivalent in the text. Fans of the Penderwicks books (Alfred A. Knopf) will find this series a pleasant diversion....more
