Hinds' graphic adaptation of 3 poems and 4 short I'm late to the game with this one, but as a big fan of Gareth Hinds', it was worth seeking this out.
Hinds' graphic adaptation of 3 poems and 4 short stories goes a long way to make understandable - for today's teens - concepts and verbiage that Poe set to paper nearly 200 years ago. (I remember first reading "Amontillado" as a high school freshman in the 1970's and totally not understanding what was going on until our class discussion. I felt like an idiot.) Featured are several of his most famous works: "The Masque of the Red Death", "The Cask of Amontillado", "The Tell-Tale Heart", "The Pit and the Pendulum", Annabel Lee", "The Bells", and "The Raven".
Hinds uses just enough words to make this a very fast read, as he lets his creepy/spooky illustrations speak buckets for him. The stories flow along nicely, as Poe includes a checklist of themes (death, murder, disease, etc.) included at the beginning of the stories as a way to segue into the next pieced. Hinds' graphic novel mixed media illustrations are dark and sinister, as befitting the works of Poe. He adds some visual Easter cakes sprinkled throughout.
These poems and short stories were written for adults, for their haunted, shocked manner. I would go no lower than 7th or 8th grade with these. Best if used as a group and studied in schools. I encourage this as a super introduction to use with teens, Highly Recommended for grades 8-up. ...more
