Middle-grader Jensen often fantasizes of becoming an astronaut for NASA when he grows up. Overweight, with low grades academically, and on the "outside", he does not realize he is being bullied by many students in his school, often without them realizing what they are doing. When he finally finds acceptance as a helper for the newspaper staff, they ask to interview him regarding the bullying he receives at school.
Lots of white space and bright colors keep this story from getting too heavy. Characterizations show a diverse community of students in the contemporary time period.

Third in the Tank & Fizz series, this book finds the two intrepid, crime-fighting monsters—one a troll, the other a goblin—in the middle of an ancient battle between light and dark magic. The pair must help their elven friend Aleetha discover why the mages are disappearing from the Shadow Tower during the Wizard’s Summit. Readers will be drawn into the mystery by the witty remarks of Fizz, who narrates the tale, and the intertwined block text and graphic novel illustrations. No need for much description in the text, as action rules here with illustrations providing important storyline details. This will appeal to both fantasy and mystery readers as magic and technology both play an important role during the story’s climax. Fast paced and fun to read....more

Children store up questions and look forward REVIEWED March 1, 2015 Rating: Recommended Recommended Grade Levels: K-2 An author visit is always special. Children store up questions and look forward to creating a story with the author. That’s what Marie-Louise Gay delivers in this tour de force-an author visit in a book; a recreation of what occurs. A multicultural cast of curious children barrage the unseen author with dozens of questions, then jump right into helping her start a story. The story writing continues with children adding elements, until finally it is complete... or is it? Gay’s mixed media artwork is colorful, light, and lively, the perfect mix for her “visit.” The size of the book allows larger illustrations to be filled with detail of the author’s studio, the children and their questions, and the fine points she makes in the stories being written. It culminates with the finished story, “The Shy Young Giant”-making this a story within a story. Revisit this one often! ...more
