Sono divertenti i protagonisti, Hazel e Augustus, il loro amico Isaac e, in misura minore, anche i loro genitori.
Detto questo, secondo me questo romanzo non racconta niente di nuovo. Non è un romanzo molto verosimile, ma del resto come spesso ho avuto modo di notare io personalmente non cerco la verosimiglianza nei romanzi che leggo. Non mi interessa se il cancro non è descritto in modo realistico o se i genitori sono tutti mezzi santi o le conversazioni sono del genere che mai avverrà nel mondo reale. Il punto è che la storia funziona: ci sono due adolescenti che si innamorano, ma c'è un problema. Si chiama cancro. La nostra classica domenica estiva consiste nella sveglia (relativamente) presto e nella fuga sui monti in cerca di refrigerio, normalmente in moto, anche se la scorsa domenica per vari motivi abbiamo optato per la macchina. Destinazione un laghetto alpino in provincia di Trento circondato da meravigliosi tappeti erbosi su cui accamparsi come su una vera e propria spiaggia - con il bonus dell'aria freschina, dell'ombra di numerosi alberi, e di uno scenario dolomitico mozzafiato. E' meraviglioso trovare un posto così bello che sia allo stesso tempo gratuito e dotato di servizi. Inoltre la spiaggia viene condivisa da donne in topless, bambini e cani a volontà senza che apparentemente emerga nessun attrito tra i vari bagnanti. Ed è proprio con questo panorama che mi circondava, con il rumore del campo da tennis in sottofondo, che ho letto la prima metà del libro di Hoeye. Ovviamente mi ha poi seguito nelle tappe più quotidiane dei giorni successivi: sul divano, a letto, al tavolo della colazione e al lavoro.
Le sabbie del tempo è il secondo volume di una serie di romanzi del mistero per ragazzi (ebbene sì, il caldo evidentemente è il filo conduttore delle mie ultime scelte in fatto di libri) scritta da Michael Hoeye, le Hermux Tantamoq Adventures. Avevo già letto tempo fa Il tempo non si ferma per i topi e mi aveva deliziato il protagonista, il topo orologiaio Hermux Tantamoq, che vive una vita costellata di piaceri piccoli e quotidiani, che è abitudinario, preciso e zelante e tutte le sere nel suo diario ringrazia l'universo per le belle cose della giornata. Un piccolo topo che viene ovviamente risucchiato in un'avventura più grande di lui, ma come al solito cerca di dare il meglio di sé, anche in un contesto a lui estraneo (quanto abbiamo da imparare da Hermux?). Questo volume ricalca lo schema del precedente ed è quasi altrettanto delizioso. Dico 'quasi' perché purtroppo l'autore si sofferma meno sulla vita quotidiana del caro Hermux, ma è comunque una lettura estremamente piacevole e rinfrescante.
La serie continua con il terzo (Topi della ribalta) e quarto (Il tempo delle rose), entrambi pubblicati come i precedenti dalla Salani.

E' la storia della dodicenne Abilene che, dopo una vita vagabonda spesa con il padre sui treni (senza biglietto, ovviamente) e in una miriade di luoghi, sempre alla ricerca di un nuovo lavoro (siamo nell'America della Depressione), viene spedita dallo stesso padre a vivere nella cittadina di Manifest, in Kansas.
Abilene è coraggiosa e indipendente ma non essendo radicata in nessun posto il suo unico punto fermo è il padre, che ora sta lavorando lontano, e il cui ritorno a fine estate sembra sempre meno sicuro man mano che passano i giorni. Nonostante il suo tentativo di scoprire tracce del passato del padre a Manifest, dove ha passato diversi anni prima della sua nascita, è evidente che i residenti siano molto restii a fornire informazioni precise. Quando sotto una tavola della sua camera trova delle vecchie lettere e dei ricordi, Abilene e le sue nuove amiche di Manifest iniziano la divertente (ma a volte paurosa) ricerca di una fantomatica spia chiamata Rattler.
Contemporaneamente veniamo a conoscenza di una vecchia storia (all''interno della quale si situano le vecchie lettere), raccontata da Miss Sadie, una medium, mentre Abilene lavora nella sua casa per saldare un debito. E la storia di Jinx, arrivato a Manifest nel 1917, con un passato doloroso e un segreto da nascondere, e di Ned, orfano adottato da una famiglia di Manifest da piccolo, che ben presto si arruola per andare a combattere in Europa nella Prima Guerra Mondiale.
L'ambientazione del romanzo è molto attraente e la trama si svolge nell'arco di un'estate, rendendo il romanzo davvero appropriato a questo periodo. Ho apprezzato molto anche la voce narrante di Abilene, che ragiona inizialmente per 'universali', avendo dovuto imparare a cavarsela sempre in posti nuovi. Man mano che i giorni passano, però, si rende conto che la natura e i rapporti umani sono più complessi e non possono essere facilmente incasellati. Ho amato molto anche il racconto ambientato nel passato di un'amicizia e di una cittadina che, pur essendo costituita fondamentalmente da immigrati (Manifest è una cittadina mineraria) riesce a trovare un senso di identità comune fortissimo.
D'altra parte, ho dei dubbi molto forti su questo romanzo. A mio avviso l'autrice fatica a legare bene le due storie principali e tutte le microstorie: una trama troppo ricca che in questo caso diventa dispersiva. Troppi personaggi secondari appena tratteggiati, che si confondono e deconcentrano. Inoltre mi sembra che le caratteristiche del personaggio Abilene siano esagerate per una ragazzina di dodici anni, così come spesso mi sembra che i colpi di scena (in particolare la scena al tribunale) siano troppo arzigogolati: teniamo presente che questo è un romanzo per ragazzi! Complessivamente piacevole, non convince del tutto.
Ormai è passata quasi una settimana da quando ho finito di leggere questo romanzo, e non so ancora bene come definirlo. E' vero che è difficile definire i generi e poi ancora di più applicarli, ma a me sembra che in questo caso non ci siano i presupposti per definire The Night Circus un romanzo per ragazzi.
Come già tanti lettori hanno fatto notare, il libro parla di un circo. E' un circo che apre solo di notte, dopo essere apparso come per magia da un giorno all'altro (con le sue decine e decine di tende), dopo aver viaggiato silenziosamente in vagoni neri e dai finestrini oscurati su rotaie ben oliate. E' un circo incredibile, affascinante, mesemerizzante. Insomma, ci siamo capiti, è un circo *magico*. E qui mi fermo, per non rovinare la lettura a qualcuno.
Nel complesso lo definirei un romanzo carino, ma non coinvolgente. C'è una buona atmosfera, con questo circo così particolare che è il protagonista principale del romanzo. La società dei reveur, appassionati del circo (in realtà ben più che appassionati) è altrettanto piacevole. Si percepisce il loro amore per questa realtà che aggiunge una dimensione speciale alle loro esistenze. Il problema è che i personaggi principali (i due mentori che gareggiano fra di loro, e i due discepoli che dovrebbero fare altrettanto) sono talmente mal tratteggiati da non suscitare la minima simpatia, né provocano il desiderio di sapere come si concluderà la loro storia. E' ben più appassionante Baley, il giovane che, lacerato fra le sue aspirazioni e quelle della sua famiglia, sembra aver trovato la sua strada ma forse troppo tardi...
Onestamente, nonostante non sia stata una lettura spiacevole, non lo consiglierei, perché non è il genere di romanzo che lascia qualcosa al lettore. Nell'ambito dell'intrattenimento puro c'è sicuramente di meglio. Io mi aspettavo decisamente di più, visto lo scalpore che ha suscitato e che mi ha spinto a leggerlo, nonostante le ambientazioni circensi raramente mi ispirino.

When You Reach Me è un romanzo per ragazzi (il premio Newbery Medal è infatti dedicato alla letteratura per ragazzi) che ha come protagonista la dodicenne Miranda e include un viaggio nel tempo. L'autrice, Rebecca Stead, si è ispirata al famosissimo (negli Stati Uniti, qui in Italia non credo molto, anche se è stato tradotto negli anni Novanta da Bompiani e più recentemente dalla Giunti) A Wrinke in Time (in italiano Nelle pieghe del tempo, anch'esso vincitore del Newbery Medal), un romanzo di fantascienza per ragazzi pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1962. Anche la protagonista di When You Reach Me, Miranda, è molto appassionata al romanzo e continua a rileggerlo. All'epoca l'aneddoto mi incuriosì ma non abbastanza da recuperare e leggere il romanzo di L'Engle, evidentemente. Sabato però in libreria sono incappata proprio nella nuova edizione della Giunti e dall'incipit mi è sembrato il libro perfetto per accompagnare un week end di beata nullafacenza.
Meg Murry si sveglia nel cuore della notte a causa del vento che infuria fuori dalla finestra della sua camera, e non appena sveglia viene assalita dalle sue molteplici preoccupazioni: Meg è una ragazza qualsiasi, un po' bruttina, con l'apparecchio ai denti, gli occhiali e dei capelli color topo che non stanno in nessun modo. Inoltre, viene costantemente rimproverata dagli insegnanti per la scarsa applicazione, dalle compagne di classe per il suo infantilismo e derisa dai compagni di scuola per il fratellino di cinque anni, Charles Wallace, che tutti considerano tonto. Se questo non bastasse, tutti gli adulti fingono partecipazione nei suoi confronti solo per estorcerle l'ultima novità riguardo a suo padre, uno scienziato impegnato in una missione per il governo, lontano da casa ormai da qualche anno. E che non sta dando notizie di sé da diversi mesi. Nonostante l'ambientazione iniziale molto 'cosy' la storia si sposta ben presto in mondi sconosciuti grazie appunto a un viaggio (nello spazio e nel tempo) il cui obiettivo è quello di sconfiggere il Male che sta minacciando la Terra e, incidentalmente, ritrovare e riportare a casa papà Murry.
A Wrinkle in Time è soprattutto un romanzo distopico per ragazzi (e non mi stupisce che la Giunti lo abbia ripubblicato visto il trend inaugurato con The Hunger Games), in cui il tema del viaggio nel tempo secondo me è davvero secondario rispetto alla visita presso il pianeta Camazotz, governato dal dittatore e ipnotizzante cervello chiamato IT. Un altro tema molto importante è quello cristiano, anche se devo dire che io (forse perché sono cresciuta come cattolica?) non ho notato molto. Certo, si fa riferimento a Gesù come a una delle persone che hanno combattuto contro il Male (personificato nel romanzo da una Dark Shadow che incombe sul pianeta Terra) però insieme ad altre famose personalità non religiose (grandi artisti e scienziati di tutti i tempi). Ed è vero che le tre 'streghe' vengono definite, ad un certo punto, angeli custodi, ma non mi sembra abbastanza per affermare che il romanzo è indottrinante. Personalmente ho trovato più forti i rimandi a Shakespeare. Ed esilarante l'incipit "It was a dark and stormy night", che io conoscevo per via di Snoopy scrittore, nelle strisce a fumetti di Schultz. In realtà ho scoperto che si tratta di un famoso incipit di un romanzo vittoriano. Divenne famoso come esempio di cattiva scrittura, di una scrittura così ornata e fiorita da distogliere l'attenzione del lettore dal flusso della narrazione, e dal significato della narrazione stessa, ottenendo così il risultato opposto a quello voluto. E' proprio in questa accezione ovviamente che viene poi riutilizzata nei Peanuts.
Devo ammettere che i libri di fantascienza non sono proprio il mio genere, ho provato When You Reach Me, Il mago di Ursula Le Guin* che è davvero un caposaldo di questo genere, e ora l'amatissimo A Wrinkle in Time e nessuno dei tre mi ha convinto. Forse sono romanzi che possono davvero affascinare in tenera età, e al libro della L'Engle sicuramente bisogna riconoscere che negli anni Sessanta scrisse (o meglio pubblicò, lei il romanzo lo scrisse molto prima) un romanzo di fantascienza con una protagonista femminile, e che protagonista! Meg è una scienziata in erba, un genietto della matematica, non particolarmente bella né particolarmente simpatica, insomma una classica signorina qualunque, in cui sicuramente ci si può identificare, e che però diventa la protagonista attiva di un'avventura tutta sua. Al di là di questi meriti però io non ho trovato il romanzo abbastanza accattivante da convincermi a provare il secondo della serie (questo è auto-conclusivo, badate bene).
*Edit: è vero che Ursula Le Guin è una scrittrice nota nel campo della fantascienza, però per amor di correttezza devo ammettere che Il mago è un romanzo fantasy....more
Con il caldo di questi giorni qualsiasi attività sembra estremamente impegnativa e, a parte il lavoro che non si può purtroppo evitare, e qualche impeCon il caldo di questi giorni qualsiasi attività sembra estremamente impegnativa e, a parte il lavoro che non si può purtroppo evitare, e qualche impegno domestico più o meno basilare, l'unico desiderio è quello di piazzarsi sul divano con il condizionatore acceso e un libro a portata di mano (all'elenco aggiungerei una bevanda fresca o un ghiacciolo, qualche film interessante e un pc con connessione ma mi sembrerebbe di essere troppo avida, e poi un libro è già di per sé il non plus ultra). Certo i desideri non sempre si avverano...
La giornata di sabato è passata fra lavori domestici, commissioni varie e una camminata pomeridiana che non è niente di che di per sé ma con certe calure ha il solo risultato certo di portare alla disidratazione (al rientro ho dovuto bere ben quattro bicchieri di acqua perché la mia attività cerebrale riprendesse). Ma una parte del tempo l'ho spesa davvero sul divano, e il libro che mi ha tenuto compagnia è stato ovviamente Picnic al cimitero e altre stranezze di Marie Aude Murail.
Si tratta di una biografia di Charles Dickens per ragazzi, un libro dall'ottimo aspetto che prometteva acculturamento senza eccessivo impegno (quest'anno cade il bicentenario dalla nascita di Dickens, e un libro che parlasse di questo fantastico autore, se non un libro propriamente scritto da lui, mi pareva d'obbligo). E l'autrice in effetti è riuscita a ricreare per i miei occhi l'immagine di un uomo geniale, iperattivo ed irrequieto che, pur essendo estremamente sensibile alle più svariate questioni sociali (spesso ancora prima che divenissero tali, magari proprio per il suo interesse), nella vita privata - e soprattutto familiare - era un uomo difficile, estremo, sempre preso dalla mania del momento e soprattutto incline a crearsi le sue proprie regole di vita, senza curarsi troppo delle convenzioni sociali ma neppure delle conseguenze sulle persone a lui vicine.
Un ritratto vivido, che però è necessariamente incompleto, superficiale (nel senso di poco approfondito), che non si può considerare un fallimento di intenti, ma una logica conseguenza del taglio scelto. Come lettrice adulta avrei avuto bisogno di un livello di introspezione e di indagine superiore, o per lo meno mi sarei aspettata un approccio più originale*, dato che dell'autrice ho già apprezzato diversi romanzi per ragazzi molto originali. Devo ammettere che se questo libro non fosse stato scritto dalla Murail, non l'avrei nemmeno preso in considerazione, per cui è stata una piccola delusione ma non posso davvero definirlo poco valido.
* Ammetto che questa aspettativa è stata creata molto anche dal titolo in traduzione, che appare una vera e propria scelta pubblicitaria a fronte del sobrio originale Charles Dickens.

Cécile è patologicamente timida, ma grazie al suo approccio didattico del tutto personale e alle sue storie di Coniglietto Cacchetto, ben presto i primini le si affezionano moltissimo. Ricambiati, ovvio! Per Cécile il rapporto con i suoi piccoli non è un problema, in compenso il mondo degli adulti la sconvolge.
Il tema principale di questo romanzo è l'integrazione razziale, ma Cécile è prima di tutto una fiaba urbana. Ciò che mi affascina nei romanzi della Murail è proprio questa commistione così riuscita di svolgimento fiabesco, personaggi naif e modernità. Una modernità che sembrerebbe il classico cavolo a merenda, ma in realtà non stona, e comunque viene spesso rintuzzata (il gruppetto di Lolite che canta canzoni alla moda scompare di fronte alle storie di Coniglietto Cacchetto, il progetto di un fast food in pieno centro viene sbaragliato dalla solidarietà, etc.). Certo è un libro poco realistico, ed è un romanzo per ragazzi, eppure rientra anche nella piacevolissima categoria di romanzi buonisti per adulti che hanno bisogno di un tiramisù spirituale....more

Libro veloce e poco impegnativo, perfetto per le piccole pause di un'Epifania trascorsa a disfare l'albero, riporre i decori natalizi e finire di montare un armadio Ikea. Nonostante la leggerezza, però, Nodi al pettine non è per nulla insipido, e nemmeno banale, specialmente considerando che è rivolto ai giovani.
Louis è un ragazzino di quattordici anni che non brilla negli studi, e vive un momento di confusione. Uno stage, imposto dalla scuola, e svolto presso un negozio di parrucchiera, sarà l'occasione per Louis non solo per scoprire la sua vocazione lavorativa, ma anche per confrontarsi con altre persone e i loro problemi.
Niente di trascendentale, intendiamoci, però la Murail nel suo genere è davvero brava. Di lei in particolare raccomando Oh, boy!, che mi ha fatto innamorare. Ma anche questo romanzo breve affronta in modo spigliato e divertente il mondo del lavoro: ci saranno lavori di serie A e di serie B? è meglio puntare a quello che la società ritiene migliore, oppure scegliere ciò che ci dà gioia? Nodi al pettine è una deliziosa favola moderna per ragazzi, perfetta anche per gli adulti, per un momento di relax e sogni ad occhi aperti....more

Quando il pacco arriva a Clay, per lui è particolarmente duro rendersi conto che, con il senno di poi, era facile capire le intenzioni di Hannah, di cui lui è sempre stato innamorato, senza mai il coraggio di dichiararsi, spaventato dalla sua reputazione di "ragazza facile".
A tratti la reazione di Hannah a ciò che le succede può sembrare esagerata, a tratti può sembrare inverosimile ciò che le accade, ma questo è un viaggio nel lato oscuro del mondo degli adolescenti, un viaggio che merita di essere portato fino in fondo. ...more

Uno straordinario romanzo in cui un grande evento segna la vita di tutti i protagonisti (la narrazione è infatti scandita come un conteggio alla rovescia) facendo loro imparare il valore dell'esistenza, il dolore, il perdono, l'amicizia, l'amore....more
