It's clearly manipulative, which I always frown upon, and it does speculate on the most urgent social issues - the horrible misadventures of the underprivileged, the low-lifes, the scum of the earth (with tender souls, of course). It's quite cliched, and many characters are one-dimensional, although the author does seem to have been striving to portray them otherwise.
On the other hand, unlike many other dull and up-to-date books, I finished it eventually, and was not quite uninvested in Romy's fate. I just wish the writing hadn't been so fragmented. All in all, the book failed to rip my heart to pieces, as it must have been intended, and while I am convinced that two life sentences plus six years is way too much for one desperate woman, I can't see why she should have been acquitted....more

:)...more
