It was so obviously aimed at the white audience it hurt. The book was screaming, hey you vanilla people, you don't know anguish, you don't know hurt, you don't know racism, so lemme show you, lemme tell you a story that will make your toes curl!
While also dealing with terrible violence and injustice almost beyond modern human understanding, Homegoing is neither moralistic nor extravagant. The author is neither preaching nor lamenting, she's not judgmental, neither is she greedy about her reader. It's as if she's simply telling a story because she's urged to, and everyone is welcome to stop by and listen. Sometimes the story is brutal, sometimes it's sweet and soft as a feather. Her gentle yet powerful storytelling isn't compelled to impending any feelings on you (guilt, regret, self consciousness, you name it), and my, this is so professional. "History is storytelling", says one of the characters, well, I wish I had had a history teacher like Yaa Gyasi back in schooldays. ...more

...more

I like audiobooks because they make me walk home from the university. You know, chilly breeze, river splashing, trees blooming, a great story.. Yesterday I was walking along the Palace bridge and hating this (audio)book with all my heart, for it is so boring, so unremarkable, so not involving. The basic plot line is that there is a civil war. In Nigeria. There are good guys and bad guys, and there is hatred and violence, and oh yes, it is terrible that they shoot and rape people in plain sight and kick the maimed bodies.
The story moves back and forth between the times when it was all cool and the times when your dearest die a horrible death. It is told through three main characters: a 13-year-old houseboy, an "illogically beautiful" daughter of a rich businessman, and an Englishman who is basically a failure and a pathetic jerk but local women like him. The boy is supposed to be growing in character and so on, the lady is suffering because she's barren and not much liked by her twin sister, the man is becoming less of a jerk while learning about great biafran culture. I'll give you a moment to wipe away your tears.
It's a weird thing: the book seems quite thoroughly written yet it doesn't provide the reader (okay, me) with the sense of presence, of everlasting and undoubted credibility as all great stories do. It is not even as gorgeously still as some great novels (and TV series like Mad Men) are, when there is nothing spectacular going on and you just can't put the book down eager to find out how all this nothingness ends. This one is clearly fiction. And I don't care about the characters, whether they are going to be abandoned, betrayed, killed or live happily ever after. It's such a devastating feeling.
Today I talked to a friend and finally gave up and read all the spoilers and now feel even angrier, because some plot seems to have actually been inserted there but hey, wait till you're halfway through! This is disappointing and annoying, and again, those "stunning!" and "brilliant!" reviews. People, I don't get you.
On the bright side, having read Americanah before HYS, I can tell Adichie learned her writing lesson well. You go girl, and you guys please skip this one, it's not worth it. ...more
