Being a nanny is great. Not like a job really, just like living in someone else’s life. Today before breakfast Sam had to empty the dishwasher and Will had to feed the cat. Sam: I hate emptying the dishwasher. MK: We all do, that’s why we take turns. Will: I hate the cat. MK: We all do, that’s why we take turns. Sam: Anyway, Will, the cat hates you. Will: Don’t talk shit, Sam. Sam: Don’t say shit in front of the new nanny.
К Мэри-Кей часто заходили гости, например, Клэр Томалин (литературный редактор, автор биографии Диккенса), Алан Беннетт (сценарист, драматург) и Пиппа (няня семейства по соседству, "spends ages choosing what to wear and has an endless supply of different-colored trousers (including a striped pair and a pair with flowers embroidered down one leg)").
Saturday: Mary-Kay came home with an eight-foot-tall Xmas tree. She’d carried it up from Inverness Street with one of the market blokes. We had a lot of problems getting it up. MK thought the stem was too long (she called it a stem, it was actually a trunk). MK: Someone will have to go to the Millers’ and borrow their saw. (We ignore her.) MK: Who’s going? I’ve just lugged the tree home. Will: Not me. Sam: I’m not going. MK: (to me) Looks like it’s you, Nanny. I said I’d go if Sam came with me. When we got there (only a few doors up) we had a scuffle on the doorstep. When Jonathan Miller answered the door, I pushed Sam in front of me and he blurted out, “The nanny wants to borrow the saw.” When we got home, MK asked what JM had said. I said he’d said, “Don’t forget to bring it back.” MK looked at the ceiling (which in her language means “fucking idiot”).

I cannot help but give this book 5(АААА, первый раз в жизни гудридз не сохранил мой отзыв!
I cannot help but give this book 5 stars: it's completely unremarkable but I can't find a single flaw to it.
There are people. There are people they love. Some of them live, some die. Some do stuff, the others don't. Some go to church. They seek peace and forgiveness. They'd welcome happiness but they are a bit too lazy to actively pursue it.
To me, Anne Tyler's books are the definition of life, simple, boring yet fascinating life, with its meek ups and downs and humble achievements, nothing spectacular, nothing too fancy, nothing too scandalous. Her style is also just perfect: plain, unembroidered, even, she's witty but not too much (and never mocking!), smart but not imperious - I could go on and on but you get the picture, don't you. I think she's a great storyteller, and I'm oh so lucky that she's prolific, for there is always a novel for the hard times.

This book is immensely adorable yet VERY MESSY in the plot department.
Regardless of all the "alive alive" corn fields in the story, black mares as the blackest of nights (duh), wandering goats (not ghosts!) and enchanted castles with swarming with servants (yep, managed a bee metaphor into the review!), my biggest question is to the Most Beautiful Girl, also known as A Botanist Studying at Univerisity and Still Communicating Using Only Occasionally Correct Present Simple Tense. Also, Miss Ruby, I know it takes some precious time to google, but even I bothered to check that there is no such Polish word as "golobki", "pierogi" is plural, for god's sake -- and I'm only writing a review, not a book.
Otherwise, the romance between the "bee-eyed" girl and the guy with a "problem with faces" is really adorable, I enjoyed it very much....more
