Только усталость мешает мне полностью пересказать вам сюжет, потому что такой сюжет ещё придумать надо.
В двух словах: одна девушка, несмотря на то, что вместо мамы и папы у неё была мама и три ее китайско-индонезийских сестры, выросла и сбежала от них в Нью-Йорк. В какой-то момент мама устала ждать grandbabies и закадрила дочери симпатичного парня в тиндере. А дальше слушайте сами, иначе неинтересно.
Короче, кому надо выключить мозг на пару часов, смело хватайте, не читая ни в коем случае аннотацию, лишите себя радости офигевания. Я прямо каждые полчаса лежала и думала oh no they didn’t. But if course they did....more

На самом деле, чем меньше вы знаете о сюжете этой книги, тем лучше. Давайте просто: это большой американский роман. Кто говорит, что «че-та не очень», тот, наверное, не понял, что прочитал. Не буду останавливаться ни на одном эпизоде напряженного сюжета; допустим, это история из жизни маленького городка под названием Одесса в штате Техас, где-то в 70-ые годы.
Это история про нефть и ярость. Про гроздья гнева и костры амбиций. Про лестницу, ведущую вниз, про долину кукол, про гекльберри финна в женском платье, про унесенных ветром перемен.
Это история учительницы, которая уходу за младенцем предпочитала вслух читать Уиллу Кэсер классу буйных подростков-реднеков. Это история девочки на велосипеде, чья мама однажды уехала и больше не вернулась. Это история красивой дамы на каблуках, откладывающей деньги с каждого проданного товара по каталогу. Это история мира, где ни одному мужчине, «даже такому славному, как твой папа», нельзя доверять заботу о твоей жизни и благополучии. Это история бытового расизма и ежедневной, всем привычной и оттого даже не заметной дискриминации. Это история Глории.
Я могу понять, что люди откладывают эту книгу от ощущения тяжести и надвигающейся (а то и уже хорошенько двинувшей всем героиням) катастрофы. Но мне кажется показательным, что Глория после события Х становится не, скажем, Джулией, а Глори — все та же слава, все то же сияние, пусть и в его американском варианте.
Для меня это история о преодолении и о победе, которые происходят внутри. Кто-то сравнивает книгу с «Оливией Киттеридж» — очень люблю Страут, но нет: у Страут каждая история нанизана на подкладку из безнадежности и обреченности, а у Ветмор героини, несмотря на чудовищные внешние обстоятельства, всегда найдут ружье, в полной тревоги и страхов пустыне вытащат себя из ямы окровавленными руками, сядут за руль и поедут на закат. Страшно, больно, очень жарко — но вы справитесь, девчонки, слышите, справитесь.

Парадоксально, книга далеко не так ужасна, как многие ее современницы.
С другой стороны, очень заметно, что писала-писала автор про актуальное, а в конце спохватилась — блин, это же Книга, а не Манифест! — и забабахала финал в лучших традициях сентиментальной литературы; ну куда это вообще годится?
Есть в книжке несколько хороших историй, и аудио замечательное, но не покидает чувство, что при проверке временем все эти тома встанут на полочку рядом с газетными передовицами и социокультурными исследованиями, а не в литературный канон....more

Э-э-э.
Еще милый штрих: работающая в издательстве редактор 20 с чем-то лет не в курсе, как произносится фамилия Камю. Если это тоже деталь из автобиографии, то я уже и Роту не удивляюсь....more

В городе, название которого я то ли забыла, то ли его не было, ведется постоянная и даже кровавая вражда между условными гопниками, бедными и оттого, наверное, бедовыми пацанами с окраины, и не менее условными везунчиками, у которых есть и красивые тачки, и умные телки, и деньги на кольца с острыми краями. В центре событий -- как раз "неблагополучная" семья из трех братьев. Дэрри красивый, сильный и работает на двух, нет, двадцати двух работах, чтобы прокормить семью; он все время орет на младших и сердится. Газу семнадцать, он бросил школу, "потому что тупой", он тоже красивый, но еще и добрый, он влюблен в девушку, а еще немного -- в лошадей. Понибою четырнадцать, и он любит читать, своих братьев, банду и смотреть на закаты. В банде еще есть худыш Джонни, когда-то избитый до полусмерти, Смешинка, который, ну, всех смешит, и Даллас, который снова красивый, но очень опасный. И все они очень ненавидят "вобов", ребят из высшего местного общества, -- до той поры, пока однажды Понибой не вздумал пойти в кино один.
События из книги про американские шестидесятые вполне могли бы произойти в каком-нибудь современном Купчино, и я бы очень посоветовала прочитать ее именно подросткам, которые запутались или не в курсе, что закаты хороши в любом районе города, что у любого мудака обязательно найдется хороший и верный друг, что каждая жизнь важна и неприкосновенна, а все различия, как ни крути, ужасно условны и всегда могут быть стерты, и для этого, на самом деле, вовсе не обязательно, чтобы погибли какие-нибудь Монтекки или Капулетти....more
