I liked the first one, but I feel like this one is better, which is pretty rare for me. So it’s definitely safe to say that this book does not suffer from middle-book syndrome [thank goodness!].
One of my biggest complaints for the first book was that I strongly disliked the changing narratives. This book, however, did not suffer from that problem, and so I really enjoyed that. The narratives are mainly on Finley and Griffin, which I definitely loved. We occasionally get Jasper’s POV as well, which I actually liked. It was the perfect balance of narration, not too much jumping around, but not too little either.
I loved the setting of this book. Truth be told, I haven’t read much steampunk. So it was really great to see a 1900’s New York in a book. I loved all the details we got about it as well. It was great to see how the people acted, the technology that was there, and the clothes as well. All of it was really fascinating to me. There was also a lot of steampunk machinery in this book, which was super interesting as well. Overall, the setting was fabulous, and so were the steampunk-ish elements.
There was also plenty of action in this book, which I totally adored. If you know me, then you know how much I enjoy action in my books! The Girl in the Clockwork Collar always had some action going on, whether it was a fight or a secret mission being carried out. It was really addicting to read because of all the fabulous action!
My only complaint about this book is that it’s not very deep. There’s no underlying message or theme that the author is really trying to convey. That’s not necessarily a horrible thing, but that’s why this books wasn't a 4.5 or 5 star rating for me.
Overall, The Girl in the Clockwork Collar was an enjoyable, fun, and action-packed read. If you've read the first book in this series, then you’ll definitely enjoy this one! If you haven’t read the first book, then what are you waiting for?
Thank you to HarperCollins and NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!
This book was a fun and interesting read. Sure, it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It was cActual Rating: 3.5 Stars
This book was a fun and interesting read. Sure, it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It was considerably lighter than what I thought it would be, but that made the book enjoyable for me. Sometimes you just have to have those lighter reads!
I really liked Finley, our main character. I loved the fact that even though she had so much power and wit, she was still a flawed character. She was constantly trying to balance the two sides of herself. Her flaws [or her lack of being perfect, to put it another way] made her seem so much more relatable and likable. Overall, I really grew to like Finley.
The concept of this book was so unique, and I liked it. Think X-Men meets steampunk. Cool, isn’t it? I loved all the powers that the characters had as well. It was so interesting to read and learn about all their powers, and how they worked. For some reason, super powers always fascinate me. I also liked the setting of the story. I honestly haven’t read many steampunk novels [I know, I know!]. But after reading this book, though, I’ll definitely be picking steampunk books up more often though. It’s a wonderful genre!
However, there were a few things about the book that I didn’t like. The mystery, for one, was easily guessed by me. I love a good mystery book, and this book had some really interesting mystery in it. Unfortunately, I guessed two of the major twists way before all the characters did. I like it when I can’t guess a mystery until the very end, or even better, when I guess the mystery incorrectly. I’m not saying that I like to be wrong [because, seriously, who does?], but that if I have to keep guessing, then I’ll be so much more into the story, trying to figure it out. That didn’t really happen for me, since I figured the mystery out early on in the book.
Another thing that I didn’t like was the jumping around with the POVs. This begins to happen more towards the end, and kind of became frustrating. This is a total opinion of mine, but I would loved to have had Finley’s POV more in the end, and less of Sam’s. I totally understand why the author was switching POVs, but I just wanted more Finley! Of course, this is a total preference thing, but I thought that I’d mention it.
Overall, this was a really great read! I loved the main character, and the concept was totally unique. Even though I easily guessed the mystery and didn’t like the POV jumping around, I would recommend this book to steampunk fans, or anyone looking for a fun fantasy read.
This book was a great read! It had lots of action, and was addicting!
The thing that I loved about this book is that it wasn't roma4.5 stars, actually.

The thing that I loved about this book is that it wasn't romance, romance, like it is these days with YA books. It was mainly focused on freedom, something we barely think about. I also loved that the real Outside world was also imperfect, so that will make for a fabulous second book.
The thing that could have improved is that it got a little confusing at times. I'm really confused right now as to who the Warden truly is. I also wish that Finn wasn't so self-consumed.
Can't wait for the next one! I bet it'll be great, but we kinda already know where it will go, so I'm crossing my fingers for a few twists in the next book. ...more
