I didn't have too many expectations with this, which was a good thing because I felt like it was slooooow. Compared to the excitement of the Discovery of Witches trilogy, it was a little bit of a let down. However! I still really really enjoyed it. I love these characters so much. I loved Marcus' backstory and getting to read about Matthew's and Diana's children.
I would LOVE to read the origin story of the De Clairmont family. Philippe and Ysabeau are bound to have the most fascinating story.
But my number one desire??? Please please please- let there be a story about Gallowglass, and let him find his mate.
Sad to finish this latest installment of the series, mostly because it might be the last. Thank you Deb Harkness for giving us a glimpse into these characters lives again. ...more

I am in awe of this author and the writing. The complex twists and turns of the plots kept me on my toes and surprised at every outcome. Now that is quite a feat, I read a lot and I can get pretty desensitized to the stories.
I wish there was a bit more romance in these books, but other than that- they were perfect. Crazy awesome good.
Now HBO needs to pick this up for a mini series and I'll be all over it. ;)...more

Ok, now that some considerable time has passed since I've read this book I can say my opinion has changed a bit. I still enjoyed it, it was a fast read for me... but I would hover my rating closer to a 3.5-4 star range now. I didn't remember how OTT every aspect of this story was! Damn.

Styx is unable to speak, and has only been able to stutter out a few sentences to his dad, and his best friend... until he met the girl through the fence.
Mae heard the boy through the fence speak to her on one of the worst days of her life... and she never forgot it. When she escaped The Order, she somehow ended up wounded and dying behind the dumpster of Styx club.
As the story unfolds, Mae learns about a world she didn't think possible, and learns that happiness exists... and Styx finds his voice again, only for her.
There were a lot of obsticles to overcome, a lot of suspense, action and sexy romance. I did not want to put this book down. I am SUPER stoked for the upcoming books in this series and will be looking forward to their release dates. A huge thanks to the author for making this a stand-alone, even though it's part of a series. THANK GOD FOR A BREAK IN THE DAMN CLIFFHANGER TRILOGIES!

As I read this for the second time, I kept stopping along the way trying to pinpoint what makes this book so incredible. I really can't say it's one thing. The writing is fluid and the story unfolds flawlessly. There is an element of mystery throughout the whole thing that is subtle, and not stressful. The characters written are so distinctive and unique, I have never read anyone else who could be a Nastya or Josh Bennett. The romantic element is slow moving and tentative, no insta-love, just a beautiful hesitancy and hope. Even though I knew the story- I was still completely gutted when I finished it for the second time. I will forever love this book, and dare I put the official title on it and call it my "favorite"? For now I will :)...more
